pulling the cab
OK after much thought on this and weighing the pros and cons i've decided to pull the cab along with everything else.
Does anyone have a link that demonstrates the easy procedure to pulling the cab? a step by step perhaps? not really all the details just the important things to consider. ANy organizing advice to keep everything straight?

i removed my cab using a cherry picker and some chains. I didn't approach very well. It was a disaster for me. Hopefully somebody else has some good tips so putting my cab back on will be easier.

I have used a cherry picker, 2x6 board and a 2.5" strap to remove and replace my '67 cab by myself a few times now

I guess my big question is are there any problems with lifting it by the roof? I expect just a 4x4 or two would do the trick...but I worry about bending the thing...

I lifted mine with a 2" strap and a chainfall hanging in an oak tree with no problems. I left the doors on and slid the strap all the way forward in the door openings, then shut the doors and lifted away.

Is your cab gutted? I did mine that way to reduce the weight as much as possible. I lifted mine very much like shown in Dean's first pic. Worked very well. Be careful of your rain gutters. I used a piece of wood in that area to keep the straps from bending the rain gutters.
As you lift the cab, go slowly so you can make sure you have all the ground straps and misc. wires disconnected. Get the emergency cable and speed cable unhooked as well.

lots of zip lock baggies and a sharpie. keeps all your parts organized, and make notes on bags. believe me you wont rember all this stuff when you go back to assembly.

take everything out, and doors off. get a of 3 of your buddies, 2 on each side with the biggest guys toward the firewall and lift away. this things are front heavy. chris.

This will come in handy when I go to remove my cab. I've thought about using the cherry picker idea. It would be better if I had a lift but then I would need somewhere to put the lift.

I think that I would leave the doors on just to help keep the cab from tweaking if you can. Did anyone else have any problems with the cab tweaking?

Take front clip off, take doors off, remove seat and tank, and get three buddies to help you pick it up and set off the frame. be carefull, as the bare cab is a little front heavy. One man can easily tip the cab from the normal position onto its back, though I recomend a dolly. These cabs are really light totally gutted out. I've got an old beat-up junk cab that I can load and unload into the bed of my truck by myself. You will, of course, want to take more care if it is a cab you are working and don't want dented/glass broken.
If you are doing a cab swap, and the old cab is really rotted/dented, it is also real easy, after unbolting it, for one person to just roll it off the frame.

I've done it three times without a "tweak". Fortunately I have a loader on my tractor which makes it pretty painless. I have done it with and without the doors. Last time without doors, with all interior still inside. Put a 4x4 through the door openings as far forward as possible, a chain on each end tied to the loader bucket, unbolted the mounts, unhooked the steering at the rag joint, cut the heater hoses and wind. washer hose, unhooked the temp. sender, oil pressure line, and speedo cable, dropped the shift rod, pulled the wiring harness apart at the firewall, slipped the wires out of the gutter, unhooked the throttle cable and e-brake cable, and ground staps. then up I went.....OOPs, broke the fuel line...and lost about 5 gallons of gold till I got the can under it. After It was on the ground I removed said 4x4 then bolted the doors back on for safe keeping of the interior till later. No bends, no tweaks, no errors.

has anyone put a cab on a rotisserie to turn it upside down and work on the bottom? I plan on making a "litter" style jig to bolt the cab to then mount to a rotisserie and be able to work on the bottom of the floor while standing or sitting..... I would die if the thing fell off and ruined my only cab!

same idea just a different truck..............we lifted an 85 blazer body during a swap this summer (sorry no pics tho)the only thing that was missing from the inside was the column.used a 4" wide cloth sling through the door opening and the back of them clivesed (s/p?).another sling was used through the rear wheel wells and brought up above the top.clivesed(s/p?) the ends togther.put a 4X4 block of wood through the two loops.wrap a chain around the center of the 4x4 hooled to a chain hoist and lift.

You bet hammer man, happy to help!!
Remember, like they all say, check it close to make sure everything is disconnected. When you pull it up with the fork, go up about two inches then stop. Get off and look it over again. Bet you find somethin' else hanging on. Never fails no matter how much you do it. Cut it loose then give it a shake for good measure. |
