what is a "front clip"

OK I've heard a few people say what they believe the front clip to be. I was under the inpression that it's a sub frame unit that can be replaced. if the front part of the frame got damaged in a wreck. Is this correct.....if not please give details..............

Re: what is a "front clip"

"Generally" speaking the front clip is considered to be the the front fenders/inner fenders, hood, and grill as a whole unit. Some people would also consider the subframe to be part of it if were talking about older cars like the early camaros or firebirds...

Re: what is a "front clip"

I (and most others) would consider that to be the front fenders, inner fenders, core support (forgot that in last post) hood, hood hinges, grill and pieces attached to grill and core support... No frame pieces. Are you looking at something on ebay to buy?

Re: what is a "front clip"

If you remove the "front clip" from one of are trucks. There is nothing coming off the frame. Now what you were tlking about is called a subframe. These were on you "mid" sized cars camaro's, Nova's,trans am. where they didn't have a full frame like are trucks do.

Re: what is a "front clip"

I agree with these guys. You have to consider the context, if it is a camaro, firebird, or hotrod site then it is probably the front frame section.

Re: what is a "front clip"

The front clip is the sheet metal parts that make up the front end of the car. The subframe is the removable frame section from a Camaro/Nova, etc. A front clip is always just the sheet metal as far as I know.On a front wheel drive, the sub frame is referred to as a cradle.

Re: what is a "front clip"

Front clip was a junk yard term that used to define anything from the firewall forward thus the "clip" term. On vehicles with body on frame like our trucks, it applies to the "NON FRAME" section of sheetmetal as pictured above. ALSO know to country folk as the "dog house" for rather obvious other use'es!
On unibody vehicles like camero, mustang, etc. the front clip kind of covers the whole thing from the firewall forward. So, just make sure you understand what somone is selling as terms are different depending~~~. Huck
