My 1970 fleet short bed came with a wood bed. Has anyone mounted a bed from the ground up. cross sill ,wood position and the rubber mounts ? some pictures would help too..

the truck in that thread appears to not have a wood bed.....unless wood rusts!

check out gmcpauls.com for lots of bed info...Here is a pic of my bed minus the wood... I had already cut the rear crossmember in these pics.

I'm going to have to relace my wood bed boards soon too on my 72 stepside box. My bigest concern is what type of wood to use to replace my old boards. Originally GM used Flat Grain Douglas Fir and painted it. I've seen people use solid Oak with a clear finish and try to maintain it against the weather (not a good idea). Redwood is an outside wood but it's soft and turns black when wet and most hardwoods do not do well in the weather outdoors. I'm thinking about using one of the South American "Voodoo" woods that have a high oil and Silica content and hold up well outdoors. The names of a couple of them are Jatoba and Ipe. They are very dense and strong, especially Ipe, and only require a little added oil to maintain their original luster. The one thing I've heard is that you need to be careful that these woods are highly acidic and so I think you would need to use stainless steel fasteners and bed strips.

I haven't replaced my boards yet either, so it would be nice to hear from others that have and what kind of wood they used and to what success in additon to any other mechanical issues to watch for.

I have original NOS wood from GM to redo mine. I think it was some kind of oil that turned it black...

you might find more pics in the link in my signature...I need to organize them but there are a few of my bed... I heard that it's best to assemble the bed on the floor, get it square and then mount it on the truck. You can mount the outer wood piece but leave the area where it mounts to the frame open until last. Good luck... Mine is in pieces up against the wall right now...
