Get the #'s off the back of the block, and look up Mortec.com.

Re: 283 0r 350?

If it is original, it is a 283. The 327 didn't come out in trucks till '66, and I believe the 350 in late 70's. Don't quote me on the 350 part.

I would think the 283 looks a lot different than the 350 in many ways. I'll see what kind of visuals I can find.

This might help a little

I believe 1969 was the year the 350 came out. Here is a nice page regarding the history of chevy trucks - CLICK ME

Some visual differences might be on the 283 you will have the oil breather on the intake manifold vs. on the 350 it will be on the valve cover. I may be wrong??

Re: 283 0r 350?

If it has the original heads than the 283 has 13/16 plugs and has no holes drilled in the heads for the accessories. The blocks look the same except the bore is smaller. 67 was the last year for the 283 in chevys. I have one from a 67 impala in mine. Also the 283 had the breather cannister bolted to the valley under the intake manifold.

Re: 283 0r 350?

a 283 will have a hole two hole's in the back of the block one for the distributor, and one for the old breather tube.

All 350 engines on the back of the block where the transmission bolts to it the first 3 numbers# should be 397010 never seen a 350 with a diffrent number unless you get to the once peace seal and they say 5.7 remmber 5.0 is a 305
