Got my tach done today!!

Here is a pic of my tach/vac dash. I got it all done and in the truck today! I took the needle off of the Camaro tach and replaced it with a speedo needle from another truck dash. What do you all think??

Thumbs up Re: Got my tach done today!!

Very nice. Was it hard wire up? Was the factory wiring already there?
What year Camaro do you get the tachs?

Re: Got my tach done today!!

The wiring was easy. I ran one wire to an IGN hot fuse, one to ground, and one to the HEI. It was harder figuring out how to mount it. I drilled a hole in the rear tin and it is mounted there. It is a tach out of a 73-81 Camaro.

Re: Got my tach done today!!

I did some parts trading to get the tach dash from a guy locally. I did not do any pics while I built it, I worked on it a few minutes at a time over the last month or so.

Re: Got my tach done today!!

I really like the truck speedo-needle idea. Cool; makes it blend-in better.

To buy a similar tach: Look on Evilbay under "camaro tach dash." They seem to be on there almost all the time. Seem to sell for about $ 20 - 30 or less usually, as a complete dash unit.

Got mine bought about a week or so ago, also with a supposedly functioning clock which will go in the lower gauge row. Came via the big brown truck just yesterday.

Haven't yet unpacked it. Some work ahead for me, too ............

Re: Got my tach done today!!

That looks real sharp, let's hope it is somewhat accurate (like my original isn't anymore). I may just go with one of those Korean replacements for $96.00.

Nice job Bob!. There was an article awhile back in FAQ on installing a Camaro tach for those interested. I have done a few myself.

Re: Got my tach done today!!

Looks even better with white overlays I painted the bulbs with green stained glass spray paint and the gauges glow green at night. Very COOL! and pretty cheap too. I got them from durangedesigns.com for 20 bucks the camaro tach overlay was an extra couple bucks I really like your idea of using the speedo needle too, wish i had thought about that when i built my cluster. if i ever have problems with it, im definately going to swap it out. Durangedsigns also includes an overlay for the a/c controls. That i know of they dont have a heater overlay though.

Re: Got my tach done today!!

I painted all my needles at the same time, I think they match pretty good and most guys never notice that the tach isn't stock. And just a tip, the 70-77? tachs are somewhat easier to mount due to the circuit board being smaller and not being secured to the tach itself. The face looks just the same but the needles are different.
