Smile Freon factory A/C ?

I have a 72' GMC with factory A/C and I've just gotten done restoring it and was wondering what freon do I use in the factory A/C. Should I use thy 134 with a conversion kit from the R-12 to the 134 or should I use the R-12 like the origional or a freon called freeze -12? Thank you

If you can afford the R-12 (and can find it) use that otherwise use freeze 12.

Re: Freon factory A/C ?

I believe that the orginal 6 cyl compressor these trucks use will not take a retrofit to a 134a due to the fact that the molecular structure of 134 is so much smaller , that it seeps through the front seal of the compressor , I was going to retrofit mine, but after taking some classes on this and being informed on the matter, I didnt.... I may have been misled but you may want to look into it more before doing it..... good luck never the less

Re: Freon factory A/C ?

My truck had that freeze 12 in it and I just couldn't get it to work right except at very high rpm's. I do refrigeration and A/c for a living and no matter which expansion valve I put in it still had no luck. I would definetly go back with R-12 but make sure you don't have any leaks because it is very expensive. And on the 134a you can go this route but it seems like some vehicles work great on this conversion and others don't. All you have to do is pull your compressor and drain the oil, 134a uses a polyolester oil and r-12 uses mineral oil, they recommend getting 80% of mineral oil out. Next change the expansion valve and your ready to go. The main problem with 134a is getting the right expansion valve for your compressor not so much that it leaks thru the seal.
