Rip - 305

Yes, the 305 finally kicked the bucket. The ignition module and timing chain failed at the same time. I replaced the timing chain and a few other parts, but something is not right. Damage to either the valves or cam is probable. I've given up saving the engine. So, for you long time board members, yes the 383 is in the works.
Timing chain failure pictures.
The stock nylon timing gears were all over the place. Teeth from the old chain are just gone. The 305 did it's last 1/4 WOT run on my way home from work a few weeks ago. So the 16 sec killa is done.
Graduate school is taking up all of my time. I graduate in Dec 07. The install of the 383 is going to take some time. I just need plan it out. The longest wait is for the AFR heads. It takes several weeks to receive them. For now, I plan to cleanup the garage and make room for the truck. It will be parked inside for a long while. Paint and other preparations will be done before the install. Remember the 81-82 bumper I needed? It will be installed to make room for the dual intake Ram Air Box!
As I work on the project, I'll take pictures and add them to my photo albums. In time, I'll redo the web page.
So stay tuned......

Re: Rip - 305

Dang. My fellow boat anchor boys are steadily fallin' away.

When I changed my timing set about 2 years ago the bottum gear was missing a tooth Changed it just in time.

Well, R.I.P. but man 383 = mucho better.

What?! The killer 305 is dead? Nooo!!

Thats really unfortunate man... If you can make a 305 go like that, I can't wait to see what you can make a 383 do!

I thought it would live forever. Mine seemed like it would.

Where are you going to school, Gerardo?

EDIT: A pic from back when we both had 305s, and before mine was lowered...

Haha, all these years I've always loved the Bad Bow! Again, can't wait to see what you do with the new engine!

Re: Rip - 305

i would love to know wat parts youre going to use , been looking intoo those afr heads too and ntoo a shortblock from precision enginering there working on a all forged version at the moment .
according to my machineshop these AFR heads are cleaner and have less castingflash than the brodix heads i was thinking about .
my plan was/is to build a low compression 383 (something like 8 to 1) and add a (vortec ?) supercharger later , this compressioniratio can be done with flattop pistons and 67 cc chambers from wat i was told .

still in the planningstage not knowing wat to do with the induction yet , carb schould be cheapest but a bit higher on miles per gallon , the injection is more expensive to buy and to tune , besides that its hard to find a good tuner here in holland with a rolling road to do the tuning itself

Re: Rip - 305

You'd need dished pistons with 67cc chambers to get down to 8:1 compression, and forget about fuel injection unless you want to buy an aftermarket ECM, and figure everything out from stock, lol

Re: Rip - 305

We are designing it with flat top pistons, but with a 76cc head you will have 8.3 to 1 compression which should work

i checked the email on it again , i often get the numbers the wrong way round , AFR makes heads with 76 chambers so i prolly be ok

i was planning on an aftermarked system for fuel injection or make my own using the megasquirtsystem , i want to be able to switch between propane and gasoline (price of gasoline is bout 7 dollar a gallon here price of propane 3 dollar a gallon ) so i need one switchable or two systems working of the same sensors.......that is wat makes it expensive .
i rather tune a carb with a gasmixer than a electronic system but the electronic one will be better once it IS tuned

Re: Rip - 305

Slonaker,
I am at SEU. I plan to finish my MBA in December.

watahyahknow,
My engine plans call for a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Equal to about 10:1 or slightly higher for iron heads. My choice are the 68 cc heads. Roller cam (1500-5500 RPMs) with matching lifters and rockers. Top end will have a RPM Air Gap intake. Running an Eddy 1406.

Re: Rip - 305

i guess i will see it when you build it then .
i've been looking on the website of precision engineering and on there they say that the 76 chambers will give a 9sumtin to 1 ratio ......dunno who sent me the mail but im sure now i need dished pistons been looking intoo the motown shortblock too now from the engineshop and they deliver an all forged 427 small block using an internaly balanced eagle crank and rods and mahle pistons to assemble youreself for just under 4000 dollar (only a little more as the 383 actually ) i guess i have to wait untill the price from the precicion comes through to see if it makes a big difference .

Re: Rip - 305

I had plans to build the engine myself. However due to circumstance, I must find someone to build the short block. Everyone want to sell a complete long block or engine.
Good luck with your project. I would like to know how things work out. What is your HP goal? Torque? My combo should be from 380~420 HP.

Re: Rip - 305

i'm schooting for 500 plus with the supercharger , but i think it will end at 400 with the low compression

you should look at http://www.blueprintengines.com/

BP3830
$1,799.00

Block:
Seasoned, hand picked 4 bolt cores, max bore .040 (69-79 drivers side dipstick)
Cylinder wall thickness "Sonic tested"
Cylinders bore angle corrected to be 90° perpendicular to crank centerline
Cylinder bore centerline corrected to be exactly centered over crank centerline
Decks machined parallel to crank centerline
Right and left side decks machined equal distance from crank centerline
Main bearing bores align honed to correct size and straightness
Cylinders computer honed to tolerance of 200 millionths of an inch
Cylinders plateau finished for virtually instant break-in
Screw-in oil galley plugs installed in place of soft plugs

Rotating Assembly:
Standard or 10-10, select castings only
Blacklight magnufluxed
Stress relieved and shot peened
Indexed and stroke corrected during grinding
Oil hole chamfered for improved flow
Super "micro-polish" for superior finish

Cylinder Heads:
Not included - compression ratios for possible heads are:
Head Size / Compression Ratio
58cc / 11.11:1
64cc / 10.38:1
68cc / 9.96:1
72cc / 9.57:1

Re: Rip - 305

Where are their short block configurations? I can't find them. I would like 6.0 rods over 5.7 rods. The deal looks sweet.

Okay, I didn't scroll down far enough to see the short block assemblies. I'll compare them to local shops. Thaks.
