Ok I just got my 70 LWB running and went for a quick drive and the power steering does not really work. The res. is full and I flushed out the system but the fluid still foams up and the pump makes a winning sound. Their is very little steering help comming from the system. If I rev it a bit it will kick in but the pump is screaming. Now I know nothing about this truck as I just got it, and it was not running but their was another steering box in the bed. Any ideas as to the pump or box?

Sounds like air in the system to me. I put PS on my 69 in my avatar and it did the exact same thing. I had to turn it by hand with the cap loose and it belched a few times and the pump stopped whining and all was well

Id put the front on stands, run the motor, and turn the wheel lock to lock quite a few more times, it sounds like there's still a bunch of air in the system. It seems someone here had the same prob a month or so back and this fixed it.

When I put hydro assist on my K5 I had to turn it lock to lock with the front tires off the ground about 15 times to get all the air out.

That was me 2 weeks ago. Put it up on stands and rolled the wheel back and forth about 20 times, re-fill reservoir, cycle the wheel 20 more times, rinse, repeat. All was well after a few of those.

Sounds like the PS fluid is all foamy. Jack stands as above and let sit overnight.

Sorry I was in a hurry before, here is the whole story. When we loaded it on the trailer last weekend it was puking fluid out the vent hole in the cap every time we turned the steering wheel. Got it home and I noticed the return line was soft and buldging (wrong kind of hose) so I replaced it and flushed the system at that time. Once I got it running I turned the wheel and it puked all over again. I jacked the front up and with the motor off I cycled the steering for a few minutes then fired it up and did the same. Topped off the fluid and it has been sitting for 5days untill tonight when I had enough junk moved out of the way for its maden voyage. It was cut short when the steering just was not their. The sound the pump was making (only when trying to force it to turn) is just like if the wheel is bound up against the curb and you keep trying to turn the wheel. I don't mind buying a pump but I just don't want to do it and not have that be the problem.

Sounds like you need a pump. My C10 didn't have problems until after I installed my ECE quick ratio box. My fluid kept foaming and the power assist just wasn't there. I tried bleeding it several times and even flushed the system more than once which didn't help. Once I bolted on a new pump she was good to go.

These pumps aren't all that expensive either. Seems like around $45 or so.

Kevin the engine has to be running while turning the wheels lock to lock to bleed the air from system. Maybe give it more time and it might clear out.

Well I bought a new pump today and also a new psi hose. I figure I have a new steering box that came with it and I already replaced the return hose so I will just put it all on in the morning and it should be good to go!

did some of the old hose get in the pump and plug up the small screen in the pressure control valve?

I first bleed with engine off and front raised. then start engine and repeat. then do it again with the wheels on the ground and engine running. just make sure you dont go to full lock while turning the wheel.
