Doing away with points. What should I get?
I'm still preatty new here and learning, that being said I'm going to be doing a points swap out on a 350 in the near future and I thought I would get some recomdations from you guys I'm sure just about everyone has tried everything.
My creteria: Money is'nt a super big option but I don't really want to spend more that 400 bucks on a distibutor. I wan't the engine to produce roughly 425 hp. Lastly if you could include everything you need when you buy it that would be great, like and MSD that needs a controller. Thanks I'm curious to see what you guys think is the best out there. |

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I did the Pertronix conversion on my points distributor and it's been trouble-free. Only PITA was getting the clearance right on the reluctor disk; it just took a little while to tweak.
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294845520 Certainly better choices given the HP level and budget, but I just wanted to throw this in the mix. MSD StreetFire HEI with an MSD 6A would be my suggestion - but you'll be a bit over $400, not including wires. |

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
A friend of mine actually used the exact same unit on his old ranger, he has preatty good things to say about it, but also said if he had a bigger budget he would probably gone another way.
Has anyone ever used this? http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...57040_-1_10679 Opinions? Last edited by Litemup; 01-20-2007 at 12:33 AM. |

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I would suggest the same MSD combo as Billa.I have never had any of their products, but MSD seems to have some good stuff. I swapped my points for a Mallory HEI and it works fine, but then again probably any HEI will be way better than points!

That's what I'm thinking, I've had points in the past, and they work preatty good but they just don't last long and require adjustments often.

I would go with a MSD box and dist. You can find good deals on used ones and they are easy to install.

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I actually found some good deals on the Pro billet HEI dist. You guys think that's better, or is the street fire with a control box better?

A friend of mine ran one for years and never had a problem with it.

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I have a few questions, I was looking around and all of the HEI dist that I see don't require the control box, is that something you just add yourself anyway? Do you think you guys could point me to some links of what your talking about. I found these:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Do these two work together, is there anything else I would need, besides wires? |

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I've had great success on a few different engine combinations with the MSD Ready To Run Distributor. Drop in, One wire to each side of the coil and one to your 12volt source and your ready to go.

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I've heard great things about MSD controller boxes. However, I'm running plain stock HEI distributors in both my 454s and they run fine. (i.e with no misfires up to 6K RPMs, inexpensive to maintain, no big controller box hanging on the firewall). Would an MSD box give me better performance? Very likely, but in my particular situation, the few % extra in various parts of the spectrum is hardly worth the extra money.
What I do miss (that I'd get with the MSD-6AL box) is the rev limiter. I'll eventually add one of these when I'm ready. I'll then choose between the 6-AL box or some other kind of rev limiter. Just another opinion here to toss in with those above, for the money I'd put a nearly stock HEI distrib in it and spend the extra money on the induction system (Heads, intake, rockers, cam etc). I think you'd see more [HP/TQ] return for your investment.

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
I used a Mallory Unilite Dist. with a MSD 6A box. When I put that in, the engine really lit up! Probably it would be better to use the 6AL with the rev limiter. I used a shift light on the column and shifted at 6500 rpms on a daily basis. Whatever dist. you get, the box would be an asset for sure.

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
The Pro Billet Streets are nice; I've used one before. I'll probably kick off a huge debate, but you DO want vacuum advance for a street-driven small block unless it's ProStreet level...which at 425 HP I assume it's not.

Re: Doing away with points. What should I get?
If you want it to look stock go with a pertronix igniter in your points distributor; but if that's not important to you then I'd say go with either a stock HEI (if you can find a good used one) or a brand new HEI from Mallory, Accel, or the like. I've got the Mallory in mine; all the parts (module, pickup coil, ignition coil, cap rotor) are standard GM HEI parts that you can get at ANY parts store in the country if you ever break down in B.F. Egypt. My engine is built fairly mild, but I'm also running a stock HEI distributor in my jet boat that has a very healthy LS6 454 in it - - works great!
