I was wondering if anyone has used a 700R4 from Mad Dog transmissions in Tampa, FL? They sell a lot on eBay and seem to be pretty good. I've also looked a lot at Bowtie but Mad Dog fits my current budget a little better so I can always save up a little more for Bowtie if need be.
I'm probably gonna look at runnin a 3.42 or 3.55 rear with the 700R4. I'm currently running a 3.73 rearend and a TH400 and when I hit about 55-60 MPH I am maxed out. I'd sure like to be able to run 70 MPH without killing my engine so I'd sure like to make some changes to either the tranny or the rear end.

try it first with your 3.73 gears...that is about the ideal gear for an old heavy unaerodynamic truck. A few have discovered this after spending money on the rear.
Also, if you are literally maxed out at 55 - 60 MPH, then your truck has seriouse issues. You should be able to hit 100 MPH no problem with 3.73 gears.

i bought a 700R4 from them and i know another guy in this area bought one too we both found MANY used parts in a supposed performance rebuild internal wire harness was burned and shorted to the case etc// dont know if it actually worked or not i sold at a big loss due to lack of confidance in MADDOG// old farm truck?? are you sure its not a 456rear

I've got many miles on my Bowtie 700 and am very happy. Also stay with the 3:73's. They are great with this trans. I went to 3:53's and am still kicking myself.

his is a C/10... probably a 3.73 gear. 4.56 wasn't even avalible, and it'd say 4.10 if it had them (onless it had an overdrive originally, then 4.10 would be standard)

It's not that I just hit a wall there, I can just tell I'm hitting the end of the power band and it doesn't really want to push much farther than that. I'm also pretty sure my speedo is off by about 7 MPH but I don't have any proof so I don't really know where I'm at.
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll just wait till I can get a complete package set-up from Bowtie.
The option list on my glove box door says 3.73 so I'm just assuming as everything else is pretty much original. A PO could have messed with it but I don't think it has been changed. I guess I can go ahead and look at getting it rebuilt then and probably add a limited slip too. The reason I want to look at a 3.55 or 3.42 rear-end is that I spend a lot of time on the highway. I hate just having it screaming while I'm running out to the strip to go get beer cause I can just watch the beer money gauge go from Full to Empty.

With the 700 and 3:73's it will be like the motor is idling down the freeway.
Even with the 3:53 I'm only turning about 2300rpm at 70 mph. With power and top end to spare.
