OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

I found three models in the restoration manual and I need to find the correct one for my stock 3/4 Longhorn restoration. I am looking for pictures of the 4-barrel 327 w/o air injection (49 state emission legal). I don't know if the 2 barrel was the same air cleaner. The '68 truck manual shows an air cleaner that was not available on any truck...sales and marketing...go figure!

Somebody has to have a stock '68 with 4-barrel 327!!!! Hey, maybe I have the only one...I bet it is worth a ton of dough...LOL! Here is the '68 brochure that shows an air cleaner that did not exist. It is an air pump engine anyway so not what I am looking for.

HELP!!!!

I was reading my casting book and I recall it saying something about in 67 or 68 they introduced AIR in Calif and after 1 year it was standard equipment on all of them. Let me go see if I can find that but then again I could be wrong. BRB

I was kinda right. The page is talking about exhaust manifolds. Hope this helps. Bottom right.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

Not sure if 67 and 68 are the same but, my buddy has a stock 1967 327 4bbl air cleaner. It will eventually go back on his truck once we get rid of the Edelcheese additions by the previous owner (the good thing is he saved the stock intake+carb, air cleaner and valve covers, with orignal stickers yet!). If you need pics I can get him to take some or if you can wait I can get some on the weekend when I go over there.

It has/had federal emissions (not CA).
It has a PCV system, which draws filtered air from the air cleaner through the passenger valve cover and then out the PCV valve on the drivers air cleaner.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

I can definitely get pictures of a '68 327, 4 bbl factory aircleaner. My buddy bought a '68 'burb that is a factory 327 4bbl, and is all original other than really bad paint. It will be mine, after we get going on restoring his grandfather's '67 lwb for him.(hehehe another 'burb for me).

I will have to e-mail the pics to someone (tomorrow or later tonite), 'cause I'm 'puter illiterate and have no idea about posting pics(hence, I've never posted pics of my 'burb). Somebody just PM me your e-mail addy to send them to.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

Chris H, That looks like the CM, KM 250, 350 air cleaner shown in the factory manual. These are illustrations so it could be the one. It should have one PCV inlet under the lower plate.

1LoC10 that looks like the paper/foam/oil model that was one of the three options available but more common on larger trucks and 6cyl. engines. The manual said that cleaner was good up to 100,000 miles before service!!!!!!!! Then again...maybe it is the angle of view and it is just a paper element filter.

southernparts, Was that indententation for the distributor? Is there an inlet on the under side for the PCV hose?

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

My 68 4B 327 air cleaner is a dead ringer to Chris H's and the vintage picture that Stllookn posted.

My understanding of AIR and smog controls in 68 is:

AIR pumps and PVC on all Manual transmission 1/2 ton only trucks nation wide.

Heat Risers PVC on 1/2 ton auto transmission trucks. I'm not sure if 3/4 and 1 ton autos had heat risers or not. I'm thinking not.

Chris H, Do you have any more pictures of that truck on hand? It looks like a dandy from what I can see.

I find it interesting that your alternator bracket is orange instead of black like 99.999 percent of all other Chevy small blocks. Mine is orange like yours and I'm always getting told by "Experts" that it's the wrong color.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

Mine is identical to Southern Parts. I rescued it from a big block GMC - 68plus. Just never quite sure if those parts are original by then or have been switched. I guess that it is original now after seeing SouthernParts. Original for BB but maybe not for SBC. Maybe for 1T but not for 3/4T.

Tom, I cant be certain from the picture if that bracket is orange or has a coating of corrosion on it? I think it was actually black?

The truck is my old 1968 Chevrolet C30 Open Road motorhome. It had 28k on it when I sold it to Racerface. In the engine shots, I had hastily installed an HEI and a second set of plug wires after the points/condenser failed me on the road.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

1lowdiesel, That looks like one of them from the '68 shop manual for a 1/2 ton. I will bet that Bob Moore and toms68cst are onto something with the 1/2 tons having the air injection and heat choke air cleaner features while the 3/4 and 1 tons had just the plain snout. The big block cleaner was larger in diameter and had the coped corner in back for the dizzy.

So I am guessing (educated) that for my 3/4 ton Longhorn that I will need something similar to what chrisH has shown...small block (small diameter cleaner) with the plain snout and no heat stove option.

Dang it takes forever to figure out this stuff...you would think that it would be a little easier with the factory service manual but it shows 15+ different air cleaner illustrations and nothing specific for the C10, 20 and 30! Go figure!

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

Stllookn, I see your point about the orange alt bracket. I'm sure my bracket was orange before I stripped it. It had good quality paint on it. It was tough to get off.

One would expect to see scrapes in the paint where the alternator adjusts. Perhaps Chris can check into it more now that he has the truck.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

I found two 67-7 acs here with small snorkle and no heat valve. One is really rusty and the other has many breathing holes drilled on the sides. Hard to save and protect all these parts and not much call for acs, so most are scrapped or rusted.

Re: OK Let's See Stock '68 327 Air Cleaners!

Pritch...is that a 4-barrel...I hope, I hope? I am looking at the pics and seeing lots of things that I have been wondering about on my engine. The location of that sparkplug wire holder. I may need some close-ups of some things on there. Was the burb a 1/2 ton?

67sss, Thank goodness my Longhorn is a 3/4 ton so there was no air pump on it. Otherwise I would be up there digging through your garbage...LOL!

Pritch, What are your plans for the rest of that engine and tranny? I have another '68 50th Anniversary Longhorn that is missing an engine and tranny. I need to verify that it was a small block truck first. I may need more pictures of where things are located on that engine too. My guess is that heat stove from the driver side and hose are MIA.
