230, 250, 292 Oil Pans Do They Interchange?

C'mon all you 6-pop guys out there, do the oil pans bolt up the same on these motors? I am attempting to put a 292 in a '66 Nova, and this part is CRUCIAL in making it happen. Anybody? Thanks, Mike

Re: 230, 250, 292 Oil Pans Do They Interchange?

I knew a guy that had a 63 Nova. The guy before him swapped a 250 from a Camero into it. Let's just say he didn't really know what he was doing (ie: he retained the Camero pan). Basically the center link was hitting the pan and the turning radius was horrid. We found a 62 Chev II out at the wrecker, grabbed the oil pan, oil pump (VERY IMPORTANT) and the dipstick tube. We also took pictures of where the dipstick was since it is in a different location than the Camero. I believe the dipstick hole is next to the fuel pump rather than at the rear of the block (Camero and I would assume trucks have this). We lifted the motor, drilled a new hole for the dipstick, swapped the oil pump and put on the new pan. Also machined a plug and siliconed it into the old dip stick tube. I wanted to tap a hole in the old one and put a threaded plug in, but we opted it not worth it because the car was sold already. To answer your question: As far as a 250 goes, the pans WILL interchange. I'm pretty sure the 292 will as well, however: the 292 had a relocated passenger engine mount and a taller deck height (1 1/2"), which may be a problem stuffing it under the hood of that small Nova...

I always thought it'd be neat to put a 250 in something (along the lines of a nova), with a 2bbl intake. And then I'd make an adapter plate and put a TBI on. But anyways, good luck in your project.

Be sure the crank and the oil pickup tube don't meet at some point.

You mean, you don't like metal shavings in your oil?

Re: 230, 250, 292 Oil Pans Do They Interchange?

Thanks Morg, Jim and of course the world famous Shifty. I have the original 230 with the correct oil pan to fit the Nova, I'm just wondering if there are other differences in the 292 that will keep me from putting the car pan and pickup on the TRUCK motor.I know the block is taller, so hood clearance is not an issue, that's what they make COWL hoods for RIGHT? This is just MY way of bringing my love for these trucks into my old CARS as well. I will let you guys know what I find out. Take care, Mike
PS Shifty, whatever happened to the ORIGINAL little Twinkie lookin' guy?
