My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
OK Here's my situation, Bear with me! My 71 has 2 40 series Flowmasters that dump just before the rear axle. They have been no problem for a couple of years now in the neighborhood. The Problem:
1- Work has been slow so instead of cranking my truck once or twice a week to go out of town for business at 2 or 3 in the morning, I have been taking shorter runs and I crank it almost every morning. (I'm a truck driver) 2- Since it's cold and my baby is cold-natured, I have to run it @ about 1000 RPM's for 5 to 10 mins vs. 2 to 3 at idle when its warm outside. 3- The complaint is coming from a DPS Trooper in the neighborhood (UH OH) Now that I've said more than I needed too, What would be a good choice to "tone it down" and I mean way down? I plan on putting these 'Flows on my 59 Apache so its not a total loss. How much quieter are the "Hushpower" mufflers? Can I get away with 1000 RPM for 10 mins with those? The complaint is coming from a real stand-up neighbor and They were very polite about this issue. Let me hear what you guys think! Thx, J

Re: My 71 is under attack bfrom the Sound Police! HELP!!!
you tried adjusting the carb so you can fire it up, let it idle for a min or less, and drive away?
Not trying to sound cockey, but I fire mine up every morning at 5:30, let it run with the choke on for less then a min, tap the throttle and pop it in gear, then tip toe outta the neighborhood. (It's in the teens to 20's in the morning here) |

Well Tex. I hate to say it but you need to get those pipes routed all the way to the back instead of dumping in front of the axle. That's like pounding on a drum. And maybe use some of those small diameter insulated tips to get the volume down to a tolerable level. But hey, you could always install some of those electric exhaust dumps to open it up after you leave the neighborhood.

Re: My 71 is under attack bfrom the Sound Police! HELP!!!
This is vague and a long shot, I know.... Years ago I heard that factory Mopar mufflers for large Hemi-equipped cars were great quality, quiet, and had better flow than just about anything else on the market. Never had 'em, so no personal knowledge.

Got a crossover pipe? If so, try blocking off the exit to one of the mufflers. All exhaust will have to go through one, and this might quiet it down enough. Unblock it once you get out of the neighborhood.

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
ROFL...
I was JUST dealing with this problem today... 18 inches back from the collector, the pipe turns to mount the mufflers under the body of the truck, outside the frame rails. Then turn out for weed burners in front of the rear tires, all 3" Series 30 flowmasters. Need to finish the H pipe, just not a lot of room. I got pulled over yesterday am, and the cop says "Dont you know its illegal to run open headers?" Series 50 on the way

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
Do you have to get your truck inspected? I have 40 series on my 3 trucks and love the sound. If your exhaust has no leaks, it is street legal and NO ONE can make you change it. You should complete the exhaust either out the back or behind the tires, that will take some of the deep base out of it. Ask your neighbor if he is willing to pay for your new quieter exhaust system.

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
Not really, if the guy was kind in asking about it, and a trooper, you dont say that in his face.
Maybe if the guy is light-hearted, but I for one dont really push my luck with cops. The neighbor hood cops can hear my go cart coming, lets say that. Im forced back onto the back roads, and I do that just so I dont have to deal with them. |

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
Texanidiot25,
As long as he drives it with some since and does not get into it in the neighborhood, that shouldn't be an issue. It sounds like he (the cop) has an issue with loud exhaust systems. As long as they are legal, all he can do is complain. If he starts to hassle him about it then a complaint aginst him can be filed. If he starts to pull him over constantly for no reason then it becomes harasment. Doesn't matter to me what he does, I was just stating my opinion.

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
put a decible meter up to it cause atlest here its 95 db at 100ft and if youre under that then theres nothing he can legally do exept complain till hes blue in the face, because me personally i have 26in glasspacks on mine and yea its loud but not very but i plan to put some flowmaster racing mufflers to make it louder but then i like loud exhaust i enjoy hearing my engine unlike alot of aholes out there that all they know how to do is b*tch and moan about everybody else and not just mind there own beeswax

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
Great comments everyone! As L.H. said, I should adjust the carb. It's been a bit rich lately and has needed some tweaking. The other comments about the stock exit point makes sense as well. Getting him to pay for it is probably a "pipe dream" (no pun intended). He is a stand-up guy and his family is great as well. I see it as I'm the "new guy" in the neighborhood and if I attempt to remedy a situation for the betterment of all that live around me, it will come back around to benefit me in some way in the future.
Don't get me wrong: If someone is rude and obnoxious about a totally legal exhaust system, They will hear from me every morning! This was brought up in a nice manner so I will respond with a nice solution...Thx ya'll!

Re: My 71 is under attack from the Sound Police! HELP!!!
well if it passes inspection with them on,,he cant do much any way,,now if you were out there revving it up alot,,then he might have a right to complain..id go with old fashion 12 inch cherry bombs...see how they like that...im nice ,but i dont play well with others..aint much they can do if its legal..let them complain,,and if he starts harrassing you,,then file a complaint,,if he starts pulling you over,,then you can complain to his boss...like i said i dont play well with others,,especially nieghbors..
