How does it work? Idle solenoid...

Am having a little trouble understand how the idle solenoid operates... it does not appear on any of the wiring diagrams I have or can I find a book that explains it operation... (I have the 1970 service manual and the factory assembly manual) ... it is a red wire.

How does it work? ... once the key is turned on does it stay energized continuously? I understand how to adjust it ... just no sure why it is there... can someone make me smarter... thanks

idle solenoid usually is energized only when a/c compressor clutch is turned on to keep engine idle from decreasing,

is adjustable by turning the shaft of the solenoid that contacts the carb linkage

It is a anti-deseling solenoid, it shoud push out any time the key is on. You set your idle speed with the "bolt" end of the solenoid, and have the idle screw on the carb set completely closed. Now when you turn the key off the carb closes completely, no deseling.
