brake boosters - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i found some old 73-87 trucks that my friends uncle is letting him part out and there are some brake boosters in em i was wondering if they will fit (probly not rite) if thats the case then how hard would they be to make them fit?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe you could make them work from the 1973-87 model year. You would need an adapter plate to mount the booster onto the firewall. Also, I think you may need another rod to go from the booster to the pedal, because the ones out of those trucks are the wrong length. There may be other things that I missed that someone else will add. I just bought a new one, but they cost about $150+

I think he is correct, but get it and the rod and try it. I think you can use the bracket off your truck onto the newer master cylinder and your old rod. I just used a 3/4 ton booster from a 72 that way it is all the same except the 3/4ton have a dual diaphram (which is why I swapped, dual diaphram=better stopping with less peddle pressure)

I took a booster off from a 78 Scottsdale and had to modify several things to make it fit. The bracket was wrong, so it had to be modified. Also, in order for the booster rod to line up with the pedal assembly I had to notch the firewall where the rod passes through. The rod from the 78 was not long enough to reach the pedal assembly, so it had to be lengthened. And finally, the shouldered bolt that holds the rod to the pedal assembly was too large in diameter to fit through the rod for the 78. I had to grind the bolt hole slightly to allow clearance. Like an idiot, I never tested the booster before I did all this and it turned out that the booster diaphragm was leaking, so it all came back off. In short, this swap was a complete whore. I'm sure others have had much better success, and other years from 73-87 may have different brackets, rods, etc. Good luck with whatever you decide.

There is some info on this topic in the threads below. In general, a little modification is required but they are a pretty easy retrofit.
