Factory Holley ?

Our 1969 GMC has a factory 396 and on top is a holley carb. My grandfather bought it in '71. I was just wondering if it was possible for it to be factory, and if so any idea on how many cfm?

Re: Factory Holley ?

My 1969 GMC Service Manual lists only Bendix-Stromberg, and Rochesters. The Bendix-Strombergs were used on the 305 V6's and Rochester for all other applications. The 396 should have a #7029214 Quadrajet.

From my past experience, Hollys were used only on 366's and 427's on large trucks.

Re: Factory Holley ?

The thing is that it has been in my family sice it was 2 years old and the original owner said he didnt change anything. But then again we looked underneath the truck and it has a pair of purple hornys for the mufflers.

Yes. My literature from 1969 says the 366 and 427 trucks came with Holley Mdl # 4150G.The other V8s got Rochester.

Re: Factory Holley ?

I have a carb that came off a 350 sb Chevy. It was a 1973 year model and it is shaped like a quadrajet but has Holley stamped on it. I haven't owned the truck in 20 years but I still have the intake and carb. Will take a picture or two when it warms up a little. I'll try to even find a number on it too. I've had more than one "expert" leave shaking their heads.

Re: Factory Holley ?

When I bought my new '69 El Camino with the 396/375hp engine, it came with a Holley (800 cfm, iirc).

Ron, I know Holley had an aftermarket spreadbore replacement for Q-jets, but am not aware of any o.e.m. applications.

Re: Factory Holley ?

I have a couple of the speadbore holleys just like that. I would doubt that it is stock, but Chevy and Holley had a relationship, as in Muscle cars and Holleys went hand in hand, but not on a truck. That might have come from a stock application vehicle and was then bolted on there, clean it up, put a kit in it and drive it, it doesn't matter if it is stock or not!

Re: Factory Holley ?

Interesting. My friend is in the process of buying a "all original" '70 GMC with a big block that is said to have the original Holley on it too. I haven't seen it yet, but if it does, I'll snap some pics to compare.

Re: Factory Holley ?

Holly sold truckloads of speadbores in the 1970's as a bolt on replacement of the Q-Jet to those who didn't know anything about carburetion. They ran good but I couldn't ever see any difference except for the decrease in fuel milege. I'm sure they were never installed at the factory.

The carb I have looks nothing like the one pictured. I didn't get a chance to get a picture today but will tomorrow for sure. Here are the only numbers I found on the carb and intake. Intake # is 9997771. under that number is GM 2 On the top of the fuel inlet (which comes in from the right side but looks like by changing a block off plug could come in from front) is the numbers L7454 and under that 9142. This truck was a 1973 year model and I bought it in the early 1990's so it could have been changed at some point but it looked to be original and the air cleaner and everything about it fit like a glove. Will get pictures tomorrow for sure.

Rage n Rat, Your book don't happen to have a picture of that monster does it? The only reason that I have kept this setup is no one has ever seen one like it when I show it to them. Oh well gives me something to do tomorrow in the cold.

Re: Factory Holley ?

I'm looking at a big block interchange manual and there is quite a list of 396's that have holley carbs. Most of them are in the muscle cars but your truck may have been ordered with a passenger car block. I have a 69 CST with the 396 and it came from the factory with a passenger car hi-perf block. The original owner ordered it that way. Get me your block # and I can cross reference it to see what model it is and if its original. Hope I can help.
