Re: hey i was thinking about a 383
a 383 is a 350 with a 400 crank and rods. the 350 block needs to be clearanced by the bottom of the cylinder bore for the 400 crank. the factory never made a steel 400 crank. you can get aftermarket stell 400 cranks. the 400 cranks have a larger main bearing journal that needs to be ground down to the 350 main bearing bore. if you have a 400 crank and rods, you will spend about $200 in machine work having the crank ground and block clearanced. boring the block if necessary cost between $130-$180. you use the 350 block the machined 400 crank, the 400 rods, and pistons specially made for the 383 combo because the piston pin height is different between the 350 and 400. they are readily available and becoming cheaper as more people come to embrace the 383. you can use any non 400 sbc heads. there are companies making 383 rotating assemblies that all you need is a 350 block. any other questions feel free to ask.

Re: hey i was thinking about a 383
mmmmmm nope the 400 bearingjournal is larger you need spacers to run a 350 crank in a 400 block and grind the journals of a 400 crank to get it to fit the 350 block

Re: hey i was thinking about a 383
Best approach is to buy a complete rotating assembly from a single vendor - this will reduce the overall cost of the installation and ensure everything fits. Depending on the build level, you may need to upgrade cam, heads, intake, etc. This really isn't a 'conversion' it's an overhaul with new crank, rods, pistons and rings. Figure $750 - $1000 for the rotating assembly and about $200 for the shop to clearance the block - other costs are the same as a straight overhaul. You can certainly clearance the block yourself, and reduce the cost by reusing your existing rods, etc....but often this results in mismatched parts and more $$$ spent in balancing and clearancing.
Might be best to start with what you want from a 383 and how much you want to spend |

Re: hey i was thinking about a 383
400 blocks in good nick are hard to find a lot of people build big engines with the good cores
i think a complete rotating assembly is the best bet too it all weighed and balanced out of the box all that is needed is the machinework to the block itself and the top parts like cam heads and all that . hot rod magazine is having frequent articles with recepies for 383 engines and the power they make theres one called dragonslayer try to find that one its a pretty basic engine with great power for money ratio

this is the way i am going:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY...mZ260080352108 along with these heads: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB..._promot_widget Takes all the guess work out, and minimizes the costly room for error.
