disc brake dust shield

What is the purpose of the opening in the disc brake dust shield? I am talking about the shield that attaches to the spindle. Does the opening go on the top or bottom?
Thanks

Re: disc brake dust shield

I think it is for air flow. Good question though. I searched for this answer a couple weeks ago and came up dry. So I looked at my 03 ram and they were on the top and also on my 90 chev they were on the top so I installed them on the top. Now in another picture I saw them on the bottom.
I dont know if it really matters.

Re: disc brake dust shield

Should be for air. I think it's related to cooling of the brakes

Re: disc brake dust shield

Thanks for the replies. I have the assembly manual for 67-72 trucks and it doesn't the dust shield to spindle orientation. I guess it doesn't really matter.
