Re: Door hinge rebuild services

I just got a set of pins and springs for my dad's truck. I haven't tried to rebuild them just but I will let you know when I do. Doesn't look that hard.

Bernie,
Tell me how hard it is, and how much time you spend on four of them.
I had a guy do my four and I supplied him with the springs and pins and he broke 2 springs so I got 2 more and he charged me $100.00

Jeff at Bowtie Bits does a top-notch job with anything he rebuilds. I wouldn't hesitate to buy rebuilds from him.

Re: Door hinge rebuild services

They are actually easy to redo providing you have the parts and good cores. I drive or drill out the pin, media blast the parts and push in the 2 bushings from the pin kit. if you don't have a the spring and lever on the hinge you just tap in the pin and peen the other end.

The hinge with the spring and spring lever is a trickier. you may have to remove the hinge stop pin and lever, repair or replace the lever and redo the pin and peen it. then connect the spring and push in the bushings and the tap in the hinge pin.

The key is good cores, a sand blaster, ability to fabricate the lever arm and some patience.
$100 to rebuild 4 is probably not a bad deal as long as they turned out right.

Was going to tell you to buy a new set from Goodmark, until I looked at the prices! $400 for a complete set.

dwcsr,
why would you put brass next to these two steel parts, those pins are so hard you can make punches out of them!
The pins will never ware out, and having the brass in there you are asking for a rebuild after a short use period. There is a lube point on the hinge that will last for another 25 years, and that is all I am looking for !!!!

Re: Door hinge rebuild services

Unfortuneatle they do wear out hence the thread, but the hinges on my truck have teflon bushings as do most all the 552nd- 59. The kits have the brass, not sure on the 55 down. the very reason bushing are used is because to pieces of the same metal rub on each other and most owners never lube them properly. A brass bushing has alway been used as a sacrifice part in what evert applications its used in so that the main pieces don't get worn out usually only the brass or bronze wears out. they also tend to hold lubrication better due to the porus nature of brass and bronze.

Re: Door hinge rebuild services

We got a kit from Brothers and they come with a bronze type bushing. The original hinges were metal to metal with no bushings. The kit is a universal one so there will have to be some modification done. I need to take some measurements but it looks like the hinges will have to be drilled out to acceot the bushings and then the pins will have to be shortened for the early hinges. If I remember right from my auto parts days the bushings are self lubricating bronze. The bronze is a little tougher than the brass but will still wear. The good part is that they will now be replaceable when they wear out. Most later model cars and trucks use this same bushing. I know they look exactly like the bushings in my Camaro. It is going to be a while before I get them rebuilt but I will take lots of pictures and give my view of the assembly.
