converting 49 3100 to 4X4
We have a 49 3100 body and chassis that has been in the family since it was new. It is not functional now at all. We want to update it. Some of the changes include an automatic 4X4 transmssion/drive train. Is it possible to make this change on the current chassis or as an alternative, is it possible to put the body on a newer chassis that has or accommodates the transmission and drive train we want?

Re: converting 49 3100 to 4X4
In the long run, you will be better off using a different chassis. There will be so many modifications to your existing frame, not much of it will end up being "stocK", once you're finished. I like the S-10 idea. Lots of conversion parts out there for small block chevy to S-10 chassis. The with should be just about right also. Plus a newer frame will hold up to the added weight and power. Easy way to get power steering, disc brakes, the list goes on. Besides, wore out S-10's are rather reasonable price wise.

Re: converting 49 3100 to 4X4
and your 49 frame really isn't setup for modern power and 4x4 loads. Your leaf spring mounts are too short so you have to extend your already smallish frame forward to fit modern springs on. just my 2$ worth
