Almost ready to give up!!!!! Help!!!
As I mentioned in my earlier post I rounded out the plug in the head for the temp sensor. Like an idiot I drilled a hole in the plug and tried to use an extractor to get it out. Could not get it to budge. I brought the welder home tonight thinking I could weld up the hole in the plug and things would be good to go. I can not get the plug to quit leaking. I dont want to damage my head but I don't know what other options there are. It would be wonderful to be able do the repair with the head still on but I think that isnt going to happen. I guess my only real option is pulling the head and taking it to the machine shop. Anyone have any advice?????

Re: Almost ready to give up!!!!! Help!!!
Find a flatwasher with an ID just under the OD of the plug. Weld it on by filling the center. It's important to weld it in one step to get good heat & penetration. Let it cool a bit & weld a nut to it- around the edges of the nut- welding the center won't be strong. Let it cool and it should spin right out.

Ouch
Do you have enough room to get oversized Wise Grips on it??? Get plenty of bolt ease liquid on it. Heating head will not help, since brass typically has a greater coefficient of expansion than cast iron. (I am assuming that you have cast iron heads!)

Re: Almost ready to give up!!!!! Help!!!
I think that I am going to try welding the washer and nut on tonight and see if I can get it out. I am getting a trace of antifreeze out of the first exhaust manifold bolt hole on the left side.....Is that hole part of a water jacket or shouldnt I be getting any at all???????
Thanks Jeremy |

Re: Almost ready to give up!!!!! Help!!!
Not sure why antifreeze is coming out of the manifold bolt hole. Can't remember seeing it on a SBC before. If there are no cracks running out from the hole, just clean the threads good & put plenty of sealer on it when you put it all back together. The end hole on small block Mopars is drilled all the way thru to the water jacket- you have to seal those. The first manifold I pulled on one of those as a kid freaked me out- antifreeze was shooting out on the wheelwell
