Re: starter solenoid
I'm using a generic kit from Summit on my 69. Here is where I have it mounted.

Re: starter solenoid
Just curious, but how does putting a F@rd sol inline of the pos+ wire help?

Re: starter solenoid
I’m no expert, but I believe the GM starter solenoid gets hot and can’t pull the contacts in to make it start. I assumed the F@rd unit bypassed the GM unit. IIRC it’s only a problem with headers.

Re: starter solenoid
...you can steal any old furd with a screwdriver and chunk of wire. Id' rather use a heat shield or wraps for headers.... but to each his own.

Re: starter solenoid
The ford solenoid doesn't bypass the gm solenoid it just allows full battery voltage to go to it. When the gm solenoid gets hot it takes more juice for it to engage the starter bendix and the starter windings. If the solenoid clicks but the starter won't turn then the starter windings are heat soaked and the ford solenoid won't help. That's provided the battery is fully charged and all connections and grounds are good. The heat shield will help prevent both conditions and should be used especially when running headers as was stated.
Here are two diagrams to illustrate how the ford solenoid works. Notice that the large red wire from the battery positive terminal routes 12 volts to the gm solenoid without going through the key and neutral start switch and several feet of wiring. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------

Re: starter solenoid
Why not just bypass the factory solonoid all together? I drew this up real quick, hope its clear. Undo the copper strap to the starter motor and connect the power wire out of the F@rd solonoid directly to the motor lug. The above diagreams look like you still go through the factory solonoid, which in my opinion just makes things more complicated. Like VetteVet mentioned though, this won't do any good if the starter motor iteslf is hot.

Re: starter solenoid
If you look at the picture in post 4 you can see that the solenoid also throws the starter bendix out to the flywheel gear. If you run it as you suggest it will just spin the starter. I think the ford starters have a worm gear that throws the bendix gear when the starter spins.

Re: starter solenoid
Yep, thats right, forgot about that. So, the only point of putting in an external solonoid is to put less strain on the key switch leg???
