40 gal Suburban tank?

Has anyone put one of the 40 gal. Suburban tanks under the back of a truck? I have a 72 long bed 4x4, and would like to get the stock tank out of the cab.

I did so on my `80 3/4 ton 4x4 longbox, I imagine the frames are reasonably similar out back, so I figure it applies.

I put the stock mid 80's suburban bracket out back, as far to the rear as I could, then built my own bracket up front using the spare tire crossmember (not sure if your truck would have one), and a peice of angle iron.

The clearance between the tank and my 14 bolt is pretty tight, within a few inches, but it won't hit it. I tested it by undoing my upper shackle bolt, and resting the frame on the bump stops. On my truck, with the stock step bumper, the tank only hangs down about 2" below the bumper.

There are only a two problems I ran into while installing the tank, first was that the box's crossmember sat on top of the tank, so it had to be notched, second was the filler, but your older truck has a side marker fill mod that works real slick.

Some one a few years ago put on in a LWB 4x4. He said he had to indent the tank a bit to make sure the differential cover would clear on a hard compression.

Faster 57 did a 40 gallon installation on a Suburban that is worth looking at. He did a very nice job on describing what he did and he made some very nice pictures.

I saw a 71 4x4 blazer with one of those big tanks. It looked exactly like the ones in our burbs. If you are talking newer style tank, the thread JimK put up is the way to go.

Thanks for all the input. I have found a few burbs being parted out in my area, so now I've just got to make some calls to get the right tank.

I put one in my SWB 4x4 71 pickup. no modification to the tank but had to put a small notch the small cross member (second from the rear). Truck had a 6 inch lift and the trailer bar in the back obscured the most of the tank when looking from the rear. I took a cut out fuel door off a 85 blazer and welded it into the side of the bed on the drivers side just before the rear marker light and it looked great.
