LS7 Engine
Have any of you Hotrodders ever sit behind an LS7 engine? That must be one of the most powerful engines around. Sen one for sale a bit ago under 7 grand . Fella said hes afraid to Rodeo that one. Thought that was a pretty good reason and a cheap chuckle. Hear they are used in Corvettes. Any one know about these Monster Engines. Even though they are called small blocks .......... Thanks Larry

It depends which LS7 your speaking of. The original was a big block 454 which GM also sold as a crate engine for around $3500.00 but has not been available for many years. The newest version is in the Z06 Corvettes and produces 505 horespower from 427 cubic inches of small block. I just purchased one in December and it is a beast! I have owned a few muscle cars in the 70's and had a racing engine business for 9 years from '80-'89 and it is right there with anything we built back in the day. The Mustangs don't even try! They are available from Chevy as a hand assembled engine, but even with my discount as a Dealer employee they are way more than $7000.00, so if you could snare one for that it is a steal!

First used in the 2006 Z06's. They are rocket ships.
427.6 ci (7008 cc) Aluminum small block & heads Bore 4.13" Stroke 4.00" Forged crank and pistons Titanium con rods Dry-sump oiling Composite intake Titanium valves, In 2.20", Ex 1.61" (sodium-filled stems) Valve lift 0.591", rocker ratio 1.8:1 Compression 11.0:1 Redline is 7,000 RPM I want one too...

Larry that LS7 is definately a big block 454 from the 70's. They are hosses. The newer LS7 is a small block and quite powerful too, rated at about 500 hp. I've not driven the latter one yet.

Along these lines, I was at Foster Auto Parts (late model pick and pull with some way too high prices) and they had a complete Viper V10 and 6 speed box. It made me think about options for mine.
A friend of mine bought a Magnum SRT8 last year and with no mods, gets an average 24mpg. It has that advanced Multiple Displacement System and is incredible. Why doesn't Chevy build something like that?

They do. It's called Displacement on Demand. They've had it out for a couple of years now. It's on the LS7. That engine is so economical that it is exempt from the gas guzzler tax.

Yeah those Displacement on Demand engines area pretty nice... got to drive a new Impala SS... 5.3 smallblock in front wheel drive car is pretty fun

I stumbled on a 1967 Camaro in El Paso back in 1976 that had an LS7 transplanted in. The car was for sale for $6500. I drove it for a very few precious minutes.... undoubtedly the fastest car I have ever driven to this day. I was scared to floor it, part throttle was good enough for me. He had 4.11's in the back and an M22 four speed. Unbelievable!

I'm big into the current generation motors, and my truck will definitely have one. The LS7 is nice in a completely built crate motor package, but isn't cheap. I'm probably going to build my motor on the LSX block. I hevent decided if I want it to be a 400, 427, or 454. I've been leaning towards the 400, so I can run the 8/400 badges. Then again, I'd hate to leave the extra cubes on the table.
For those who aren't up to date in these new small blocks, GM has just introduced the LSX small block from their performance parts division. It should be available in March. Its an iron block while the LS7 is aluminum, but its built for bigger displacement and more power. Parts are interchangeable with current GenIII and GenIV motors and has identical physical dimensions. It comes stock in a 4" bore, but can be bored out to 4.25+ to fit your needs. The first version of the block takes a 4" stroke while an extended deck version will handle a 4.50" stroke. For those of you doing the math, its possible to get 500+ cubes out of this small block motor, and they've designed it to withstand 2000+ hp! unfortunately the term LS7 and LT1 are used far to often. The LS7 454 was never installed in a car from the factory, only the dealer put them in or buy over the counter. they came with aluminum heads from factory and were 450hp.

Matter a fact a while back I had and engine very close to these listed for sale on this site. Thinking it was Posted on General Disscussion. love the scoop kelsfine69, just like what i wanted to build. Cept i was going dual 750 double pumpers on a tunnel ram manifold and sitting it down on some configuration of a mid 70's 454.

Good Lord, that thing makes 400hp at about 2300 rpm? There's no 4 second delay on that motor.

We have one of the LS7 engines and we have owned it since the early 80's(we bought it new from GM for $3800).It has been in everything froma 76 F-250 mud truck to a 73 International Scout.It sitting in our shop on a shelf resting comforably,waiting for the next project.It has been idle 5 years now but im looking for a 84-87 Chevy short bed to transplant it in next. |

Well, compare that to the over 80 grand for an o7 Z06 and you're getting all the umph of the engine without the $80K jewelry box. It is one bad mother, and it comes with a warrentee!! I think the killer 572 can be had for less than that. $12-14k? I'm going to tell you old timers (me included) if you think they don't build em like they used to, your dead right, thay are faster and more economic than ever. I guarentee the 505 hp z06 is faster than any of the hemi, 429, 427, 454, 426 of the days gone by, and it'll turn (more than just heads). Albeit you could've bought one of those monster muscle cars for $5-8k new, that was like the $80k pricetag now.
