Auto Tranny ID ? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey Guys, popping over from the 60-66 board, kinda quiet over there. I have a 400 pontiac motor with a auto tranny bolted to it. Previous owner tried to install it in my 66 truck. Who knows? Anyway, I've pulled it and may want to use the tranny on a sbc. How can I identify what this tranny is? TH350 or 400 or what? Thanks in advance, Jeff.

The pan on a 350 is almost square with one corner shaved off,the 400 is irregular shaped.

Thanks WorkinLonghorn, It's a 350 then. I guess it's a short tail shaft also (about 6" long). Are there date codes on the casing anywhere?

you'll need an adapter to bolt it to a chevy engine... not really worth the cost or effort.
The cheap adapter isn't worth the money. I think the trans-adapt is the one the caddy guys recomend.

turbo 350 and 400 trannys came in 3 belhousing styles, a chevy, a buick, olds and pontiac, and one that has all the holes for all of them.
