Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

Just went to the local "Pick Your Part" in Sunland Calif.,one of the largest and most popular in this section of L.A.,Calif. Yet there was only 1 of our year trucks ( a '71 3/4 with everything but the visors and the massive diff.with 13" brakes gone) in the many acres of cars stored there. I'm wondering where these trucks are going. I believe the yard operators are beginning to realize that they are no longer just junk and are farming them out to some specialty yard or something. This would be sad. This happened to me when I had a 71 Cougar and eventually all the 351 Cleveland 4V and even 2V cars started going to places like "Memory Lane". I think this is starting now with the pre- 73 Pick-ups.
Another thing, while I kill time during half-time ( I don't give a crap about "Prince") I notice LOTS of 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks still on the road and many still working, like mine. Yet I seldom see a F*ord truck from those years,VERY seldom. Is it the same all over? Are GM trucks just plain better, are they more collectible,or were there just lots more made during those years.Sorry for the ramble, waiting for the 2nd half.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

I remember lookin in the junkyards around San Diego (fall 2000) for parts for my 81 stepside, and getting laughed at by the yard owners when i asked if they had any chevy trucks. I would wade through all the dodge and ford's, and find nothing.
But then again, that's So Cal for ya. If it isn't totalled, or been tagged by the EPA, it's still on the road or in somebody's back yard.

you can see the evidence when you open any truck magazine. I know truckin gets hate mail all the time for featuring so many chevy's, but as the editor once put it "If people would build more fords or dodges, we'd be happy to feature them, untill then, you have to settle for what's out there."

I found two in a local junkyard here, that was it. Of course I know were there are a few dozen in other places, but we won't talk about that.

Take the tire iron to each of their body panels

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

never been to a junkyard down here in socal. Not much point in going if they don't have our trucks, but I seem to find plenty in california for sale for less than $500. Some running some not. I'm not much of a Prince fan either but they should of had the Superbowl in socal today. It was 80 degrees!

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

I don't know about junkyards, but it seems there is one parked behind a shed every 10 miles or so around here, not running, but quite a few still on the road too.

As far as the Fords, ya I don't know, I'm sure they made just about as many as the Chevy/GMC but that would be like finding hen's teeth around here now.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

Around here a lot of the salvage yards have been crushing the older vehicles because of the high price of steel. Its sad but you can't blame a yard owner for trying to make money. Blame the high price of steel.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

With the increased iron prices A LOT of the trucks are getting scrapped around here. However, for many years these trucks have been hitting the yards without any salvageable sheet metal due to rust here in Michigan. for all of you in the southern states......... please try to save the good sheet metal if you can, the people in the north eastern states would appreciate it!!

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

Well, it's been a few years since I left Tx, but down there, there were almost as many 67 - 72 fords on the road as there were GM trucks. Sad thing is, many of them were in better shape.
Now, up here, all the 67 - 72 fords disolved to rust and returned to mother earth in the mid 80's... and the GM ones in the 90's... they are all scarce up here.
As far as how many were made... we all know Dodge didn't sell squat, but as far as Ford Verses Chevy...
67;
Ford
F-100 to F-300 324,716
Chevy
C-10 to C-30 361,446
I was gonna do all 8 years, but that took more than 10 min to do... so screw that.
These numbers did not include station wagons sold as trucks, el camino type trucks, nor vans. This was only pick ups, flat beds, cab/chassis, cowl/chassis... etc.
So production, at the begining of the model years were very close.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

You have to be at the Junk Yard at the right time in LA or SD. If you are still looking for trucks like ours out here, try the desert regions like El Centro Junk yards and Bakerfield yards. You have to journey to remote locations. What I have done over the years is just drive around until you find or see something and then go ask the owner. Good Luck and if you want to know what is out here in RidgeCrest, PM me and I will let you know what is where. Yes, we even have an old Suburban Ambulance out in County line Junkyard. All kinds of goodies here.

A lot of them still in Iowa, some good, some bad. I will post some pictures from a salvage yard a couple of miles from me next week. The guy doesn't sell much cause he builds them himself but I get a few pieces once in a while....

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

They crushed them all at the yard I used to go to last year. When I got there to get a part the guy said "you better hurry out there!" I asked why and he said they are crushing those old Chevy's right now. I got my front hub of a truck that was in the crusher. Had to yell at the operater to stop! I got it from the one on bottom. The had about 12 or so of them out there and they were all crushed.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

I've been to a lot of yards in western NY, northern PA, and SC. In NY and PA if there were any trucks left they were picked clean of any usable parts. The last couple time I've gone home I've hit up a couple yards and no old trucks, all crushed.

In SC I found a fair amount of trucks in some yards, but they are so picked clean they might as well be crushed.

I had a couple of 'yard owners tell me that it wasn't profitable to keep the older stuff anymore. They make much more money on the high dollar parts off the new stuff, and if room is needed for the newer stuff, out goes the old.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

Here in South Jersey, they are still in some of the yards... There are 2 u-pullit yards that I frequent and they both have our style trucks in them. The one yard is down to only one(71 C30 Wrecker) but the other still has a few in it(69/70 C10 short/step, 69/70 c10 lb, 72 K-5 Blazer, 72 c10 lb, 71 c20 lb). There is one yard that I know of that has approximately 50 or so 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks along with F*rd, Dodge & International trucks from the same era BUT, here's the catch, he won't sell any parts from anything older than 1973... Most of his trucks along with the others at the u pullit yards have longsince been picked over.

Re: Junkyard trucks getting scarce?

More Chevys than Fords there, huh? I wish that were the case here. There are more Fords around here than Chevys. However, in a recent trip around Rome, GA, I noticed that the area had more Chevys than Fords. Oh well.
