Talking Caddy 427

I found a 427 in a Caddy at the local Pick 'n Pull, do you guys think it would be worth the $140 or not. Also what do you think it has for a trans. I am building a 388 stroker but I thought that this would be a good motor to throw in the truck to get her on the road untill the 388 is done. So I guess the real question is how much work to make this engine fit?

Re: Caddy 427

I would jump on that real fast for $140.00 bills. It probably has a 400 trans in it.

Re: Caddy 427

if not mistaken, that could be a 425 or a 429.
The 429 is a vary outdated, overweight, underpowered pig.
The 425, 472, 500... they are monsters, and WELL worth your time.

I know the 472/500/425/368 all had the dizzy up front. I think the 429 may have also.

Re: Caddy 427

Are you asking how much work to put a big block Caddy engine in your C-10 pickup truck for a short period and then you'll pull it and go to a SBC you're building? If yours has a small block now, it'd be quite a bit of work (exhaust, motor mounts, (tranny crossmember?), wiring, alternator and maybe power steering bracketry (if you have it), and perhaps a dozen smaller issues.

If that $140 motor turns out to be a Chevy 427 engine, then let us know and we'll talk you out of the SBC buildup all together.

Re: Caddy 427

a cad engine is nothing to install, but with the added cost of a tranny ( I don't recomend adapters) I wouldn't recomed the cad as a temp motor.
Besides, once you feel that torque, it'd take a hell of a small block to ever make you smile again.

Re: Caddy 427

Well guys I went back to Pick N Pull today that engine is in a 79 Fleetwood> I did some more looking around and found a 67 C10 longbed 2wd. So I ended up leaving with the factory bucket seats and the power brake booster set up, only cost me $75 for every thing. If the caddy is worth it I want to do that and when I assemble my 388 I'll either sell it or store it.

Hang on to your azz, & drop what you are buildin in that truck. I ran a 425 Cad in my truck, & while it ran decent....the 383 chev in there now will FLAT AZZ RUN CIRCLES around that old tired Caddy If you start talkin 472 or 500 on the Cad......well thats a differernt game. still the Baddest mill that ran tween my rails was a warmed up BB OLDS. if you like to see rubber smoke @ 65 mph into pass gear.....& more smoke on the shift out @ 100 +, the big block is for you . My old Olds ran a torker intake/800 DP Holley, was +030 TRW forged slugs/polished+ peend rods , with ARP bolts, STEEL crank, balanced. the heads had a good ole backyard "street port" job goin on . Basically, the shop pulled 4 angles on the ex , & 3 on the intakes(2.072/1.71 valves). I did all the bowl blend, port match, cut out the EGR bumps, & raised the ex ports. she ran a fairly mild Engle cam, headers, with 2 1/2 " pipe/H pipe, & turned em out ahead of the rear wheels, with 3 1/2" x 16" chrome cans. You know the feeling......& you will never forget that she was still pullin like a freight train @ 125 mph......a small block wont match that in street form......but that Cad had better be a DAMN big (fresh)one to go there.... If you do plan a caddy swap read this. Saved this from longhornman. I think.
