Re: Re clocking an alternator

It's very easy. Just remove the four screws that hold it together and remove the rear section with the windings. After you get it off, you'll see the brushes hanging out of the holder. Just push the brushes back down in place and stick a small allen wrench or something similar in the hole near the rear bearing to hold them in place. Then put the rear section back on in the position you want it, replace the screws and pull out the allen wrench. Hope that helps.

Re: Re clocking an alternator

I'm just a dumb ole country boy, but what is the advantage of "clocking a alternator"? Does a alternator have a "upright" position?, thus only work if an internal device is upright?

Re: Re clocking an alternator

All it does is move your wire connections to the position you want them at, top sides or bottom.

Re: Re clocking an alternator

The reason I want to re clock is that I am installing power steering, and a new internal regulated alternator. On the 6 cylinders the power steering pump sits over the alternator. The alternator I have has its plug a "3 O'clock",so it exits twords the motor,by re clocking it to "9'O'clock" it will put the plug twords the left fender.
Thanks 60-66 nut thats what I needed to know !!

Shorty, I'm about as "dumb ole country boy" as they get. I often say people should not call themselves country unless they know what fresh cow$&*# feels like between their toes. But to answer your question, yes, they will of course work in any position. The only advantage to re-clocking one is for mounting purposes only, to get the plug in a better location or to make the rear mounting hole line up with the thru bolt for those applications that require it.

Re: Re clocking an alternator

66 Nut, I do know what cow$&!+ feels like between my toes. Had to wade it to get to be barn as a child. Also i've felt the thrill of chicken$&!+ between my toes. To tell you how "country" I am, I know what that white stuff on chicken$&!+ is!

I knew what clocking an alternator was, but just never felt the need to do so. Always been able to hook them up the way they are.

Re: Re clocking an alternator

No need to completely remove the case from the alternator and mess with the brushes. Just remove the bolts and rotate the front side to your desired position, then reinstall bolts....

Re: Re clocking an alternator

If you are very careful you don't have to pin the brushes. If you look closely at the alternator you will see 2 aluminum housings and there is a darker part between them. after taking the 4 bolts out, you need to split the housings apart so you can rotate/clock the alternator plug side. Keep the sandwiched part, the dark part, as close to the rear section as you can, In other words, keep the middle part next to the rear section when doing the split, which may be only 3/16 of an inch, just enough to get the front part to rotate & clear. Use a small screwdriver to make the separation. Be sure to turn the pulley after you get it clocked and listen for strange noises, if there are scraping noises, then the brushes have jumped out, and then you have to pull it apart and ppin them in. REMEMBER THIS- if you decide to do a complete split of the alternator, please keep that middle darker section of the alternator next to the rear half of the alternator when you split it! PS the rear section is the housing that has the plug/terminals in it.
