Manual Choke

Just wondering if you guys changed out the manual choke to automatic choke, on your trucks. Or what is the best thing to do.? Any opinions will help

well you can install this kind of hooky set up with a stock carb

or you can get a 75 truck carb with a hot tube choke and convert it

Eventually, when I get the q-jet installed, I am going to go manual choke. The 2-barrel I'm using now has the later style auto choke and it usually works good (2GC). I've had problems with the auto choke that have the coil mounted on the manifold (2GV type); the later kind mounted to the carb works much better. What kind of carb are you using?

it's the original single barrel carb that's in their. rochester.

Might have to go to a salvage yard and find a later 1 barrel, say from a mid 70's straight 6 truck.

i'm in california so is manual choke really that necessary, or should i just change it out completely.

If it is annoying to use the manual chike, then I'd say replace it with an auto choke. But if it stays warm enough (shouldn't have to use the choke if it is 60-65 degrees or warmer) and you don't have to use it, then leave it in. Have you been having trouble with the carb and thinking about upgrading?

actually i'm in the process of restoring it, and just wanted to get informaiton ahead of time so I can plan ahead. so might be easier just to rebuild it and leave it as is.

My son tells me that a well tuned engine does not require a choke, so he does not have one on his 70 C-10 with a 350 and a Holley carb.

I on the other hand have a 71 C-10 with a stock 350 with a quadra-jet and have converted it to a manual choke.

What kind of engine have you? I'm assuming a straight 6 since you've got a 1-barrel.

If you wanted to convert to an auto choke, the easiest thing to do would be to get a mid 70's 1 barrel with the auto choke mechanism mounted to the carb itself. Either way, unless you buy a new carb, you'll probably have to (or want to) do a carb rebuild.

Personally, I like the direct action and mechanical goodness of a manual choke. Makes me feel as one with my machine.

dont see how if an engine is tuned well it would not need a choke.

An old racer put a manual choke on mine,. it is just a cheap one 25.00cable a bit more expensive would have been better but it works well and I like the fact that I can kick it down to a number of RPMS, whatever Idle I want and leave it there till I want it off.

Should do the same for my Wallywagon, it races till it is good and ready and can't be kicked down till it is ready. That can be adjusted by putting solder onto one part till you get the right amount of weight then it will kick down sooner. May get the mechanic to do that.
