junkyard 5-speed

I am going this weekend to the pick and pull salvage yard. 50% off this weekend. Is there a model truck or car I should be looking for to get a good 5 speed trans? Thanks

Re: junkyard 5-speed

The best one would be one from an 88 & up full size C1500/C2500 trucks. There is two types, one hooked behind the V8s, the other behind the V6's. Both will work, but the V8 one will be tougher.

I am sorry I can't remember the model Ids of the two. I think the V8 model is something like an NV3500.

Yup, NV3500 is the one you're looking for. There is also stronger NV4500 that is even tougher yet. It has a granny geared 1st and a 5th gear overdrive.

Re: junkyard 5-speed

Is the NV3500 a true 4+1(o/d)with no granny?I assumed they were just like the NV4500,only lighter duty.

Re: junkyard 5-speed

The NV3500 is a true 5 speed. No granny 1st gear and 5th is on overdrive. It came on the 90+ S10 and the full size light duty 1/2 ton trucks ---GMC & Chev. I used one for 4 years and it ran out great. I didn't race it --behind a stock crate 350--but did tow and haul a lot with it. Only issues I had was the hydraulic clutch setup and the speedo hookup is for electronic sensed ----you can't hook up a cable to it! The bellhousing is integrel to the trans. They are light weight and a pleasure to drive. Huck

I'm confused. Are you talking about the 700R4/4L60E or is this something new? I want to do a swap this summer but I am still lost (which is just about all the time)..

Re: junkyard 5-speed

i have been using a camaro t5 for 7 years with no problems. easier to find than a truck. also has cable drive for speedo. i have found that the s10 trannys have a smaller diameter input shaft than the v8 camaro. anything behind a v8 would be better than a six.

Those are automatic trannys, this one was about manual five speeds.

Re: junkyard 5-speed

anyone know a good website or book where I can learn more about different models of manual trannies? I know plenty about the different turbo hydramatic autos but Ive come to realize that I really need to study up on the straight shift models since I had never even heard of an NV3500. thanks ya'll

Here's a link to the nv3500 ratios (at least as used in dodges);http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv3500_spec.htm
Here's a site that lists the different applications for manual trans.;http://www.drivetrain.com/vartransp24.html
