questions from a newbie
Hello all. I just picked up an 86 shortbed last week. Must say im very happy thus far. I have a 305 engine with a q jet. My question is are these trucks computer controlled? Im thinking about getting an edelbrock q jet replacment for (for emission purposes). Only thing is edelbrock states that carb is for non-computer controlled cars. I have a check engine light but it seems rather basic. Truck also has 700 r4 which i know requires a little help from the computer in some cars. Anyone have any idea?

First of all welcome to the site!
I know this question has been asked before, yet I figure out a way to forget every single time But I'm pretty sure the vast majority of 86's had some computer stuff going on. I'm sure someone will chime in tomorrow and answer this question for you.

Re: questions from a newbie
If it's a CA. truck check the Q-jet to see if you have 2 elect. plugs going into the front of the Carb, if you do then it will have the Computer, my 83 has the Computer and the E4ME Q-jet, Computers were only put in Ca. trucks

Re: questions from a newbie
What happens when you disconnect the plugs as I have? I didn't think they were needed. The q-jet that was on my 84 GMC didn't have any electronics except for the choke. If the electric carb doesn't work I'll switch to the one that came in the GMC. It ran really well.

Re: questions from a newbie
My truck is a 85. I don't know what a MIL light is. I read that the plug had something to do with fuel consumption and at times it actually made the truck stumble. Thats why I figured I didn't need it. My truck wasn't stumbling, but I was trying to clean it up a little under the hood.

Re: questions from a newbie
IM thinking about just scrapping the quadra jet and putting in an edelbrock avs thunder. I have one just sitting out in the garage. All that will happen is that the check engine light will come on? After driving it today i find that im not getting decent gas mileage for a 305 with a 700r4 trans. So i dont see how that little plug will help me any when it comes to regulating fuel mixture and what not. I could be wrong but what do you all think.
