Shakey Tripod Mirrors
I bought a set of 7.5x10.5 stainless tripod mirrors for my 72 C10. They are nice looking mirriors but over 20 mph they shake so bad you can't see anything. Is this normal for most tripod type mirrors?, or should I take the $40.00 hit, $hitcan these things and buy something else.

I have the same problem out of my mirrors too. I'm wanting the small mirrors, that cames on the cheyenne's.

this is a sign of your engine harmonic balancer being bad. engine harmonics go out to the farthest weakest points . if its a hi milage balancer better check it for rubber cracks.

Guys, I hear ya on the wobbly western style truck mirrors.. but I've solved MY problem...
take a look,.. Finally mounted my 2 - 80's style mirrors. my wonderful neighbor , lent me his nut-riveting tool( with a step drill I dilled a 3/8" hole ( 4 steps ) & rivet mounted the hidden nuts. didn't need to remove the inner door panel. additional mounting bolts etc, below X two. Each side required: 2 - 3" SS bolts, 3 - flat rubber washers ( 2 pac= $0.92) 3 - SS flat washers, 3 - large nylon spacers, Lots easier to see, & swing-a-way to boot. ! NO ADDED BLIND SPOTS, like the california style western mirrors & wing window divider produced. drivers side mirror is flat, passenger side is convex. BIG & WIDE VISION even with camper sticking out... Glad I switched.. total price around 99 dollars day & 1/2 labor of course I'll now add a filler piece of blond oak but for now they are rock solid & spiffy

I thought about using that style of mirror fourty1. I really like that style on the 73-87 models. I will probably just go with the sport style mirror that came on my truck originally.(no fab work needed) A little small and expensive but rock steady.

Have you tried rubber spacers between the door and mirror?

The pivot point for all the movement is at this point where everything comes together. The movement is fore and aft. I thought of adding a horizontal brace under the flexing point.

I had the small style tripods on my K20 before I tore it apart and they were worthless - major shaking. I steped to the large style and they are so much better!

some times an easy cure is to replace worn out body mounts// poly body mounts will give you more shaking in the mirrors

I had a chance to look at my friend's 71 truck with the same style of mirrors. The big difference is the thickness of the metal tubing of the frame work for the mirror. It is at least 4 times as thick! I just need to throw these away.
 A warning to others don't buy the $19.95 new stainless tripods.

You may try a truck/ rv shop for decent tripods, I have seen nice ones at the truck/rv shops around here, not like the crappy local auto parts store versions. May try there. Or they do come up for sale on here from time to time.

I have the same problem with my 70 mirrors. Any tips with those mirrors? I installed the gasket as well. The mirrors are brand new!

The ones I have are just a poor, cheap repo of that style of mirror. The only thing I can think of is a cross brace on the lower braces making and "A" out of them. The other idea is to use the new mirrors with some nice used braces. I really don't think the cross brace will work that well though. I was going to try some oversized washers where all the bracing comes together next.
