Spacing between header & Starter ??????
Had to replace my starter today.I noticed that there was only about a 1"-11/2" between the header and the starter. My Q is will this affect the life of my starter, and what's the best solution
to correct this?????

I personally do not have headers but I have heard this problem a million times. It takes a lot off of your starter and when it gets hot from the truck running and you go to start it again after getting your gas or something, it is very hard to start. A lot of companies make heat shields that you can buy that should solve the problem, or at least help it. I'm sure Sumitt, Jegs, or JC Whitney has them but I am not real sure. Good luck and I would recommend getting one. Have a great time!

Yes you need to buy a heat shield, but thats just my opinion. Like he said, it wont FIX it but it will make the *life* of the starter be longer than without it.

YEP -- A HEAT SHIELD IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA TO KEEP YOUR STARTER A LITTLE COOLER IF YOU HAVE HEADERS ON YOUR TRUCK. I BUY THE LIFETIME GARRENTEED STARTERS, & STILL HAVE TO REPLACE THEM ABOUT EVERY 16 OR 18 MONTHS, BUT AT LEAST THEY'RE FREE.

Okay, who cares? The guy whose truck won't start because of "heat soak". It won't bother you, if HIS truck doesn't start.
Get the heat shield for the solenoid. It made a difference in mine...in fact, I've not had anymore trouble. By the way, I didn't have any trouble with it until I changed carbs. The old one, an Edelbrock 1405, was running so rich that changing to a new Edelbrock 1901 caused it be be leaned-out and properly fed, so the exhaust gasses were hotter. Anybody got a better idea? Put the heat shield on it. It's cheap insurance....oh, it's not the starter that gets affected, it's the solenoid! Solenoids DON'T have lifetime warranties.

You might try buying a mini-starter just to give you that much extra room.
A heat shield would be a good investment.

A lot of guys around my neck of the woods have the same problem too. We found that if you buy one of the high torque starters that you can rotate it will fix the heat soak problem. Oh yeah, the heat shield will help a little too.
