Steering wheeel removal & column gaskets
Any one know any tricks to putting on new gaskets without taking the column apart? Also is there a trick to removing the steering wheel? I tried using the two bolt holes inside the wheel but I believe those are for taking the comumn apart. Thanks in advance.

Those are the bolt holes that you use, but you'll most likely need a steering wheel puller. The bolts thread through the puller into those two holes. If you used a puller, remember to leave the steering wheel nut on when you pull the wheel. I ran it against the shaft w/out a nut and trashed the threads. Also, what kind of gaskets are you trying to replace?

I screwed two bolts in and tightened them a bit. The entire guts of the column now have about an 1/8" play. I am trying to replace the firewall gasket and the gasket near the dash.

If you're talking about the gasket under the dash where the column mounts,I did it the easy way.I split the top and the old one came right off and the new one went the same way.I haven't done the one at the firewall.

Thats what I was thinking of doing, just wanted to know if anyone had adifferent way. Now to figure out how to tighten everything back up.

Screwing bolts into the holes in the steering wheel shouldn'rt have loosened anything up unless you screwed them all the way through the steering wheel and into the components underneath. I didn't think the holes went all the way through though. You should be able to rent a steering wheel puller at one of the auto parts stores and they should be able to tell you how to use it (Maybe)... I split the upper and lower column rubber gaskets on my '70 and it didn't seem to hurt anything. I glued mine back together with weatherstrip adhesive after I got them back on the column. It's kind of messy but it works good... LockDoc
