Saddle bag tanks
My truck has 2 saddle tanks, with a filler port in each wheel well forward of the tire. Anybody know if they are factory or after market and how much should they hold?

Re: Saddle bag tanks
I had a set on a 68 back in the day. No they were not factory and as I recall mine held around 12-15 gallons with a manual switch valve under the seat. Factory only had 1 and filler came through the bedside on drivers side, with a switch just inside drivers door near the seat lever. And they held 12 I believe.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
Thanks Skip, mine does have a switch by the drivers side by the seat handle. I'll have to check for another under the seat.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
It may be by the seat lever... look underneath the cab and it should have 4 hoses, 1 for main, 1 each for aux. tanks, and 1 outlet to fuel pump. If there are 4 lines, or at least ports in case they have been disconnected thats all there is

Re: Saddle bag tanks
This is what my switch on my '69 GMC looks like. It says main tank, right tank (you aim pointer to the drivers door to get the right tank),and left tank. Sorry for the dirt,it's a work truck currently.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
Thanks, I don't have the truck home yet. I'm waiting for the weather conditions to be good for the drive from Ft. Worth to Cleveland.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
Hello,
Does anyone know of a good source for saddle tanks? I wouldn't mind having a little more than the standard 20 gallon tank. Thanks |

Re: Saddle bag tanks
Yea, laugh at me. I guess I misquoted a term I heard. They'd be bags if they were hanging on the outside.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
I have the same things, 20 gals either side, fill up in the wheel well, switch like the one pictured. My tanks are plastic. I used to fill up in Spartenburg SC and drive to Horseheads NY with no gas stops.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
I didn't take offense. Made me laugh too.
Hey Superjeer, I'd love to stick a diesel in mine. When I can get the finances right I'm going to be looking for late model motor. I'd like to see your progress.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
My 81 stepside had the saddle tanks, and i loved them. especially in southern california where most gas stations are one way, so i could always skip the lines and go to whichever side was open.
for those with the older selection valve, it would probably be an easy mod to switch to the later electric controlled unit, just a single switch on the dash to change tanks.

Re: Saddle bag tanks
Thanks, that would be slick. The guy I bought the truck from said he never used the main tank because he thought it might have rust in it. There is a little surface rust inside the neck, but I haven't checked the tank yet. Is there an easy way to tell?

Re: Saddle bag tanks
I have these tanks installed, and was thinking about pulling them out to put a blazer tank under the bed. (I heard this can be done). Mine has a selector switch by the seat and a 3-way toggle on the dash. Are they all like this?

Re: Saddle bag tanks
I don't know much about the system. I don't have the truck with me. Why are you considering changing the tanks? Safety reasons?

Re: Saddle bag tanks
I'll never use them. I haven't since I've owned the truck. It's just a cruiser. Not really wild about a gas tank in the cab with me either, that's why i want to go with the single tank under the bed.
