Slow acceleration

My truck is having acceleration problems. When I shift to Reverse or Drive, the idle goes Dowwwwwnnn! and eventually cuts off, if I dont use the gas pedal. Then if I WANT to stomp on the accelerator pedal, I would be going very high RPMs but I could easily be passed by a guy on a scooter . Wanted to know if its coming from the auto TH350 transmission (which I havent touched internally yet) . I did replace the modulator which only help me with shifting. fluid is still red but leaning to the brown color. Another thing also, does anybody know how to replace the shifter bolt on the side of the transmission. (I cant get to L1 & L2.) ---Andy

If i'm reading it right your RPM's go up but no go. SLIP SLIP bad bad sounds like its time for that rebuild. Also not sure about your ? on the L1 & L2 bolts or are you talking 1st and 2nd gear

Thanks for your input. I will be either buying or "repairing" the transmission (new project) as my project after I get the posi-traction and 3.73 gears placed in. Yes, I am talking about the gears. The thing is, I have too much slack in my shifter and i think the bolt is stripped on the inside. I can post a pic of what I am talking about later.---Andy

Fluid may be the right color, but is it low on the dipstick? That will cause some problems, the other could be the bands are slipping, or the filter is plugged.

Please explain your RPM statement that it goes way down low. Does it do this because you are putting the truck in gear and the tranny is putting drag on the motor, or is the motor idling way down on it's own. Have you checked your timing and the vacuum modulator on the passenger side rear of the tranny. If it is bad the tranny will stay in the lower gears and the truck will move but not shift up to the higher gears. That would cause high RPMs and slow movement.

alos I'm pretty sure what your talking about on the slack and there should be very little the linkage or braket that bolts to the tranny should have cut outs to fit over the shaft with the bolt holding it in place. Sorry about the wording having a hard time figuring out the best way to explain I'll try to get a pic.

Fluid is at a perfect level. My RPM statement, was because of the bad drag from the transmission. To tell you all the truth, I bet the transmission is a mutt. Just like my engine that I rebuilt with the right parts and some edelbrock air manifold and carb. But, how hard will it be to rebuild the transmission? Is one of those rebuild kits gonna fix my issues? ---Andy

Personally I don't mess with the internals on any of my trannies, but thats just me. I built quite a few engines I just never got into the trannies. Sounds like you need an overhaul to me and any time you put a new tranny in I would suggest a new torque converter as I'm sure most all will agree. By all means I would say have some one look at it in person sometimes thing can get overlooked in wording. I suggest if your not sure a couple estimates so no one tries to take ya for a ride.

alittle blurry but from what I can see hit the scap yard and find your self a new linkage for sure looks like someone's redneck technology there. That very well may have caused alot of your problems to begin with but it still sounds as though they lie deeper now.
