Short or Long WP with AC and Power steering?

I have kind of a perplexing situation and I'm not sure how to accomplish this. I want to move my Alt to the drivers side and install the AC compressor on the passenger side. I also have power steering. My Alt is currently on the passenger side, I have power steering and a long water pump.

I have a two grove pulley on the power steering pump that is currently running on the grove closest to the the front of the truck and to second grove on the crank. Am I able to just get a 3 grove crank pulley, a two grove water pump pulley and the brackets for the AC and Alt to put them in the right location or do I need to switch to a short water pump as well? If I switch to a short water pump, does the power steering bracket need to be changed as well?

This is my thought, if I got a 3 grove crank, a 2 grove water pump, the power steering will run on the crank pulley closest to the block, while the 2 grove water pump and outer 2 groves of the crank should take care of the alt and AC unit?

There are an awful lot of variables/brackets needed here and it's driving me nuts.

Any help?

Re: Short or Long WP with AC and Power steering?

Keep the long waterpump as they are most common, so these parts are easy to come by.

The alternator bracket is easy, you can use one from any vehicle from the mid 70's - up to the late 80's, and possibly later depending on the car. or you can pick one of the chrome jobs at your local parts store.

The A/C compressor will complicate things, because if you use a factory style bracket, you will need the matching Power steering bracket as they mount together. If you are running headers you will need to modify the stock bracket as it bolts to the exhaust manifold.

for this setup you will want a 3 groove waterpump and 3 groove crank pulley, and will need the 2 groove pulley for your PS pump.

The easiest thing to do would be to pull the brackets and pulleys from a mid 80's car or truck, as they all used the same setup.

To go one step further, you could install a serp system from a 88-98 pickup, except you would then need a reverse flow waterpump.

feel free to pm me with any questions.

Let me look in my buckets of brackets, I may have what you need. :

Re: Short or Long WP with AC and Power steering?

I forgot to ask what style A/C compressor you will be running?

OLD - Long skinny compressor
NEW - Big round compressor

Based on the fact that you are moving the alt, I'm guessing you are going to run a newer style compressor, and that's what my previous post addresses.

If you are running the older style compressor, then leave your alt where it is, as the bracket for it will mount on the passenger side like in the post by Mt Man Chad

Apologies for changing the subject but WHYBYNU, I've got the same setup on my 68 but I've had a hard time finding billet alternator brackets. Where'd you find yours?

Sweet engine by the way....

I'm not running a billet alter. bracket, it is the stock unit I had powder coated black. I hope this helps...

Ahh, it's hard to tell in the picture, thought it might be billet. I just painted mine black, I never thought of having it powdercoated...
