The value of original

What is your opinion of the value of the original carb? I can find a couple with the correct number (Quadrajet) but I don't know if it really adds value in the long haul. I would like this truck to be as correct as possible without trying to make it showroom new...A LA Barrett -Jackson. It will be driven, but it will be clean...cost is about $500.00, and I could easily rebuild the Holley that is on it, but I am curious what the panel thinks.

Re: The value of original

Whatever you do,don`t toss them.I haven`t seem a replacement that`s better, yet.Whether it`s a high-dollar truck or not,if staying original is your thing that`s a good way to go.If anything on these trucks wasn`t good enough we wouldn`t have so many runnin`around for so long.I don`t think it has to be a car for originality to matter, either. At first with these trucks becoming classic the all-original highly optioned trucks were where the bucks was. But,that`s been lost in the mix with all the people that have gotten into them. You can find trucks with upgrades and aftermarket all over them all day long. The all-originals will always be the toughest way to go.

Re: The value of original

How does that conversion work? I called around for one, and ive been told it wont work on my carb. It was suggested I get a qjet off a newer truck. Is this true?

Re: The value of original

IMO the original thing is hard too do because to make it worth the most money every single thing and I mean every single thing has to be original to make it worth while. That is so expensive in the long run that your almost afraid to drive it. If your gonna drive em like they were ment to be driven the original thing is way over rated. Don't get me wrong the original parts are all fine as far as that goes by all means, but when you see these so-called original resto's they are usually 100,000$ plus restos that will not be driven to any extent. Re: The value of original

Go with whatever carb you like...

Even if the truck is mostly stock/original, i doubt that anybody woud give you grief for the carb.

Even if you take your truck to shows, unless you are competing at concourse level, aftermarket carb isn't gonna hurt you, and depending on your setup, it might even gain you some points.

Re: The value of original

I think you have a good plan to keep everything as stock as possible. Try to run correct type parts, even if the #s don't match. i.e. Run the correct type QJET, they work great and everything fits.
Good Luck & have fun!

PS: I like hot rod trucks, too.

I know you're in a cold climate....do you drive your's often in the cold?

If so, I have a tip to make your choke work better. Remove the housing and plug the vacuum port between the carb and choke housing.

On an everyday driver, the small amount of vacuum that it will still draw thru the choke housing will make the choke plate stay closed too long. At least that's been my experience here in Missery.
