Steering wheel horn hook up?
How in the heck do the horn parts work inside of the steering wheel? I've made myself cross eyed trying to figure this out. I'm convinced I'm missing something. Here's a pic of the wheel and the parts I have to go in it.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
There is a plastic isolator that goes around the ring on the right of the picture.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
Here is a link to the LMC site. This is the diagram I used when I fixed mine. Hope this helps.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
Where can I get one of those isolators? Also, when I hook it up like the LMC pic it doesn't work right. All the pieces slide come right off leaving only the plastic ring screwed into place. Is that pic correct?

Here is a picture of it the way it goes together. you should be able to get one from lmc or junk yard, or chevy dealer.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
If you don't have the insolator it will not fit right. It will be sloppy or loose.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
Thanks Big Block & Dave. That helped a lot! I hooked it and to my surprise it actually worked. Now I need an isolator and a new rubber ring for the cap.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
No Hurdy, I still haven't found anywhere to get an isolator. Do you have one or know where I can get one?

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
You can get them at the junk yard on most 70's or 80's GM steering wheel.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
Quote:
I am swapping parts around and am having trouble with this concept. My 69 GMC had an aftermarket steering wheel on it and the 3 speed manual column was wrecked so I swapped the column out for another, and that seems to have gone well. My problem is I have taken a steering wheel and horn assembly on my 70 GMC 3/4 ton parts truck and have it mounted on the replacement column. I thought I was careful when I took the wheel off and tried to keep track of the parts, but I do not seem to have the isolator ring. I don't think it had one? Were some trucks made without the isolator ring? If so how does it go back together?

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
Is the horn not working now? I'm not sure if some trucks came with or without. I don't think my truck ever had one, but I could be wrong.

Re: Steering wheel horn hook up?
No plastic isolator ring required!
Horn is working! I think the key is alignment. I placed the metal dish in first, then the large ring that the horn button snaps onto, and then the round plastic ring (same as pictures above, but no isolator ring). Screwed in the three screws, about 10 times, and very carefully made sure the the bottom metal ring stayed centered. I am wondering if the newer horns went to the isolator ring and the older ones have thinker plastic washer/bushings to keep the horn from making contact.
