67 LWB with surface rust all over
Hi all, found a 67 LWB local that I am looking at. Problem is that it is covered with lots of surface rust. My question is how hard is it to work with a truck that is so covered with rust. I never really messed with anything like this before. What are your opinions. Truck is on its 2nd owner and the current one bought it like it is with the 327 and 4-speed on the floor. Has a posi rear that is also listed on options sheet. Seems to be all original.

From my experience that surface rust comes off pretty easy. The metal on these is alot thicker than the vehicles today. I have seen alot of them like that one.

Some of it may be problematic, the lower door there looks pretty thick.

Scotch brite pad and some elbow grease and you got yourself a rat/beater/driver.

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
Surface rust is not a problem as long as the metal isn't pitted real bad. Be sure to use a metal prep. (follow the instructions!) before you prime it. And, paint it soon after it is primed, or that rust will come right back.

that one actually looks pretty good in all the typical "bad" spots.

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
Thanks for all the info guys. You say scotchbrite pads, can you also use just rough grit sandpaper? How about wirewheels? I know sandblasting will most likely warp panels, but other then the things I mentioned is there any real issue with it when it comes time to paint? The price is not bad and from what I saw all the options list info in the glovebox is still on the truck as it was from factory. For rust preps, are you talking about the chemical stuff you apply and it stops coats the rust? How easy it that stuff to paint over? I just dont want to spend time working on it and painting, then the rust all comes back through.

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
nope D.A. complete truck down prime with self etching sealer primer and paint as you would any thing else. thats how most the model t's and pre 50's cars and trucks look before redone. they sit out in fields for years. it's the hot sun that burns the paint off there in texas.
thats a very nice truck for sure. Last edited by rage'nrat638; 02-25-2007 at 10:11 PM. |

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
Don`t use a heavy grit. You`ll make work with swirls and gouges.Be patient and have lots of elbow grease on hand.Definately treat with a rust inhibitor.I prefer the Permatex spray on.Some leave a white crusty layer that needs sanded.Kinda self-defeating.If you spray the Permatex like you`re painting, let it dry,you can prime straight over it.

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
Sand the truck to bare metal, use a "black" roloc strip disc to get in to any deep pits, spray some ospho on the metal, watch it turn black and then start from there with primer to the top. Very easy fix.

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
the one area on the truck i'd really check would be the rust by the drip rail and around the windshield area

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
I had a similar situation. See pictures below.
What I did is: 1. "Sandblaster" disk in my grinder. 3M makes it. It is purple and takes paint, bondo, rust, everything off. Don't be stupid. Use a decent respirator with this item. Who knows what is in that dust. 2. DuPont "Kwik Prep". Only in the attached pictures I used the similar PPG product. It is an acid that etches the metal. This is to get to the rust in the pits that the 3M disk didn't remove. Follow the directions on the package. 3. Epoxy primer. 4. Color. I used the acid etch stuff under many projects and have yet to have any rust come back through. I can never remember the name of the PPG product but if you search on the Google for DuPont Kwik Prep you'll find what I'm talking about. I'm sure the products others listed here work but I KNOW the PPG and DuPont products are made to go under their refinishing products.

Re: 67 LWB with surface rust all over
nice looking truck, i have a white 67 covered in surface rust as well. i dont have a whole lot of time or money to work on it so i just took care of the bad spots and am letting the surface rust stay, because it does look cool, until i get some extra time to worry about how it looks
