Anyone use a thumper cam?

This cam has me curious and sounds like it would be lots of fun!
It’s a roller cam that can be retrofitted for our blocks. The kit is kind of pricy at ~$1000
http://www.thumprcams.com/ (has sound clips too).
It says it’s hated by neighbors, and envied by friends.

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

What do you’ all think about cams in general? Somebody that built a stoker (a long time ago) said he used a Comp cams 270H. he said it ran real good too.
How about the cam that offers the 4 & 7 swap?

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

FWIW, that price was a complete set timing chain, roller lifters, springs, retainers etc.

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

Speaking of cams, I found this Summit branded cam and lifter kit for $70
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...7&autoview=sku

This has the exact specs as the Edelbrock RPM cam kit that goes for $165
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku

Anyone try a Summit cam? Are they made by Edelbrock?

*EDIT* they are not idenical but pretty dam close.

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

Used several of them with no issues what so ever. (good price for a cam and no problems) I will definitely use em again my 2 cents Mike

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

Just installed one in my small block 400 and broke it in on the new test stand...no problems so far after 30+ minutes of running between 1500 and 2500 rpm. No load yet but the price is right and they seem to work. It is all about lift, duration and separation angle...match that Comp Cam with a Summit and save some bucks.

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

this cam talk reminds me of a recent article done by Hot Rod Magazine in their special engine issue. lots of good info in there. especially on the flat tappet issue.

rollers are the way to go. IMO

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

neither summit nor edelbrock make there own cams. they are made by an outside supplier that makes all the "generic" cams. if you look at what available each company has a few cams that every single other company has an exact match of. these are basically reboxed cams. the edelbrock cams are over priced especially considering they are outdated grinds. the best flat tappet cams available right now are the lunati voodoo series. very aggressive cams make lots of power compared to similar flat tappets in the same range.thats not a bad price for a complete kit. the 4-7 swap cams have almost no benefit over a standard cam except lightening your wallet tremendously. any hp gains are in the 7000rpm range and most street motors will never see that ever and the gains are minimal at that

cableguy0 What’s your impression of the thumper? Your commit on the price referring to the thumper kit?

Can't say this is the case now, but at one time Comp Cams out of Memphis made the Summit cam's for them.

Re: Anyone use a thumper cam?

the price comment was for the edelbrocks.i am actually running the generic .480 lift and 230@.050 duration cam and its a pbm cam. i ran the same cam that came from a lunati box but when i needed a replacement the pbm saved me a ton of money and havent had any issues. i have used the pbm stuff in a lot of engines with never an issue
