Have a chance to buy this Truck for $500.00, It is a 4 speed with 4" lift & 410 gearing. Engine is 350 but has a knock in it, I have a 454 that i may use.
Contemplating Using the Frame for my 72 Wrecker Project & here are some ???? for the Expert's................. or What's required to put Manual hub's on this Truck? Will the 4 Speed from my 72 bolt up to the Transfer case? Would having a 4" lift & 14x36 Tire's Hinder using the Wrecker ? Can someone post a Frame pic of 3/4 Ton with 4 speed& tranfer case, Am a little concerned with clearance of the pto & transfer case? Does the 76 have a 133' wb? Would the 454 bolt up to the 350 mtg's? Would appreciate any advise.............. Here are some Pics of the 76................. Here is a Pic of the Wrecker................... Here's the Tire's i would like to run....................... Here's a Link to my 72 Wrecker Project from the 67-72 Boards............. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=221136 |

Re: 76 K20 W/Snowplow,Some ???
1,I will buy it
2,you will have to use a short tail shaft 4 spd to bolt on the t case,I have one if you want it,but why not use the 4spd in the 4x4? 3: I will buy the tires too...lol 4:Sounds like a good project,I might have to come up and help 5:Manual hubs are fairly easy to put on IMO. 6,the 36s will probably rub with just a 4 " lift If you are using the entire 4x4 chassis, you will have to fab up some new body mounts. 2. Will the pto bolt up to the 4x4 tranny? 3. They are 8 lug, u would have to change your axle's 4. The frame on Wrecker need's a little more work than i had realized & This may be a Better way to go....... 5. Anything have to be changed in the transfer case for the manual hub's? 6. Woul'nt want any higher lift, May have to go with 33" Year's ago i put a 68 stepside on a 78 frame, Am familiar with what need's changed. That's one of those truck's i could kick myself for parting with.... Thanks for the Input, Dustin By the way did you notice the rear driveshaft Rick |

Re: 76 K20 W/Snowplow,Some ???
I dont know, the tranny might..I really dont know.
2.I just want the tires... 3,with a 4spd it should have had a 205 with manual hubs to begin with,if it did then no work needs done to the t case,if it didnt, there is a kit used in the t case to convert it for manual hubs.I would switch to a 205 for manual hubs anyway if it doenst have one.If it had no lockouts originally it should have a 203 which are ok Last edited by 1969k10stepside; 02-26-2007 at 10:05 PM. |

Re: 76 K20 W/Snowplow,Some ???
wow nice plow frame and blade. the rest of the truck....... I am sure it could push snow for a few more years to come but that body is beat. and the motor has a knock. Since your really only wanting it for the frame i think 500 is alittle much for it. Would you convert to dual rear wheels? If i am getting this right you want to keep the frame and swap the wrecker bed, the hurculined cab, and the older dog house onto this chassie and drop a 454 in ti? Sound like a lot of work but would be really nice when done. Also i am not sue the lift springs on the 76 could handle the weight of the wrecker body.
I wish i could be more of a help. Also i have to say hurcliner is great stuff. alot of guys i know do the whole frame and underbody and floors with it. keeps that rot out

Re: 76 K20 W/Snowplow,Some ???
Maybe I got a real good deal, but I just picked up this '86 K20 for $550. I had to put a battery into it and rebuild the Edelbrock 1405, but it has a goodwrench 350 motor that runs great, TH400, 4.10 axles, the 7.5' Fisher plow, Warn locking hubs, a spare angle and spare lift hydraulic cylinder, spare plow pads, the toolbox, and 5 brand spankin' new 235/85/16 Dunlop Radial Rover RT tires. It needs brakes all the way around, including all the lines, the lights don't work, the dual tank setup doesn't work, you can poke through any part of the body with your finger, and needs exhaust (passengers side goes all the way back to the tailpipe, drivers side ends at the manifold!! she belches pretty well )
I'm sure this '76 worth $500 just for the operational plow and driveline components, but I don't think its a really good "deal". I do love those 4-speeds though. That's what I was after before I stumbled onto this one. |

You could sell the plow setup alone for the $500 then you have a free frame. That is what I would do.

Re: 76 K20 W/Snowplow,Some ???
holy swiss cheese batman! there isn't $50 of metal left on that 76 body. I'd have serious questions of what the frame looked like. Chances are being a plow truck it was in the thick of all the salt being thrown out on the roads and never washed. I'd bet the frame is very rusty if not paper thin in some spots. In other words, not the best candidate to swap a heavy wrecker body on.
To add to that, most of those types of wrecker bodies were installed on Cab and Chassis trucks. This means the rear half of the frame behind the cab is straight all the way back. This makes it easier to fab/mount different bodies on (boxes, wrecker or flat beds. The pickup frames are different so installing that wrecker body won't be a direct swap over. I'd suggest if you really want a 4x4 wrecker and the early cab, to ditch the 2wd front end and swap over the front axle, leaf springs/mounts, trans and tcase from the 76 and give that truck the much needed burial it deserves. Way less fab work in doing that with a wrecker body.

I have to let the Guy know Tonight if i want the Truck, Still undecided about using it for my Wrecker Project. If i do go that way, I would ditch the 4" Lift & go with the Dually rearend configuration......... Will probably Still buy if i Can Talk him Down To $ 400.00 or so........... Thanks to All for the Input, It's Always better to get more Input on Something that has to Deal with Safely Doing Something like This...... Rick |

Re: 76 K20 W/Snowplow,Some ???
Around me that truck would fetch about 300-400 on a good day. The only really valuble peice is the plow and it looks like it is an older set up to me not a minute mount or anything. Around here plow trucks are a dime a dozen and most of them have frame issues due to rot. That is what i would be most worried about on that 76. the body does not mean squat to you since your not useing it anyways but that body looks to be a good indication of the rest of the frames condition. Maybe not though. IF the frame were good, i would ditch the body ditch the lift add the dually rear end the older cab and nose and wecker body keep the plow and start working it again.
Are those tires Super swamper TSL's

How does that song go...... "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life...make an ugly woman your wife". I think the same goes for trucks. I havent had an ugly one let me down yet. When you try to make 'em pretty is when the get a little finicky.
