Bad News
I just got off the phone with the brakes guy. Apparently my Right Front Hub Bearing went out and destroyed my rotors and brakes. $1200 to fix everything. Yikes.

Re: Bad News
That seems pretty steep!
Is is a GM dealer? Is that just the right front? |

Re: Bad News
Brake Masters. From what I gathered from him on the phone it is just the right front. I wouldn't think it would cost that much to do it myself if I had all the right tools.

Re: Bad News
I work at a napa store and walk in price, not mechanics price, on all of the parts is about $600 minus a brake hose b/c they are dealer. $600 for labor seems pretty high.

Re: Bad News
How hard is it to change that stuff out? Any special tools I'm gonna need? Is it gonna need to be realigned? I have a limited knowledge of working on cars.

Re: Bad News
My guess is your brake hose is probably ok. If not you will probably have to pick it up from your local dealership. It is very simple to remove. It has a banjo bolt that attaches it to the caliper and a fitting up on the fraimrail. The caliper is held on by 2 bolts on the back of the spindle. It has a rotor that just slips over the hub. You may need an impact driver to remove the 2 mounting screws in the rotor. The hub assembly is held to the spindle with four bolts. It also comes with a new ABS sensor. The center of the hub assembly is splined which is where the cv axle comes through the hub. After unbolting the hub assembly you should be able to slide it off the end of the cv axle. Then just reverse the process. You shouldn't need a front end alignment. I hope this helps.

Re: Bad News
That helps alot, thanks! I looked through my Haynes repair manual last night and it doesn't look to complicated. I'm going to attempt to do it this weekend.
I picked the truck up last night. the rotor and brake pads look like asphalt and the wheel moves about 4 inches. Scary, I drove it about 200 miles in the last 4 days.

Re: Bad News
Never take your vehicle to brake places out there!! You end up paying about the same or more than dealerships!! and brake places dont put genuine parts like the dealer. They use real cheap taiwan $10 brake pads, $25 rotors, etc.... All your paying is basically the labor!!!!

Re: Bad News
I got it done on Saturday. The process was really simple, the execution was a little something to be desired. All of the caliper bolts had what I guess to be Loctite on them. Casualties: 2 ratchets, 1 socket extension and 1 18" breaker bar. Impact wrenches couldn't even budge these things. I had to get a 3ft long iron pipe to use over the ratchet. It was all worth it in the end, the tires are still on, thankfully, and I saved about $700 from what I was quoted. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Re: Bad News
Told you it wasn't that bad. Glad you got it done. Feels good to save that money doesn't it?

Re: Bad News
Good ending to the story, glad you decided to do it yourself.
When I started reading the thread, I was like, "they want how much"!!?? ![]() Reason being, I just had my right front bearing assembly replaced and the guy had it done and back on the ground in about 40 minutes! Yours was more involved than that but those brake places are nuts. |
