The 80 is home
Well we found out that it has a "Z" in the vin number. 350 diesel. It has a 350gas in it now. The fun part is going to be triyng to see what this motor is. Any tips on what to look for?

unless someone went to the trouble to covert it to a chevrolet, it is most likely a gas oldsmobile. If it has an oil fill at the front of the engine, and the starter on the drivers side, it is an olds motor.

Most of the dead diesels got swapped to Olds engines because they are a direct bolt-in. The early GM diesels were based on the Olds engine.

It's a Chevy small block. Shouldn't there be a number on the pad behind the alternator? It's getting yanked in a couple weeks and I'll see it all then. Thanks

I think the easiest way to tell is the Olds 350 has spark plugs above the exhaust manifold and the small block chevy are slightly below the exhaust manfold ports.

I have a 1980 that originally had a 350 diesel in it.. It had a 350 turbo tranny behind it and it was one of those tranny's that was generic. What I mean is it had all the gm bolt patterns on it.. I have had a olds, buick, and chevrolet motor in this truck all with the same tranny.. To my knowledge all pickups like this that came with the 350 diesel has this same tranny.. The main difference in converting between olds and chevrolet is the fuel pump and a/c unit will be on the other side..

I am also pretty sure that most diesel pickups cam with the TH400 to handle the torque of the diesel, but I could be wrong. All three of the ex-diesel trucks we have have TH400. |

It turns out it has a 267 Chev in it. TH350 and a 12 bolt.
