Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

I am thinking about tearing the truck down and starting my frame off. Should I paint the frame or powder coat? any suggestions are welcomed

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

I think mine will be powder coated, It (hopefully) goes in a month or so. I think the powder coat will hold up better than the paint. oldno7

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

I was gonna powder coat mine but I am going to use POR-15 now because if I decide to change anythng on the chassis all I have to do is re treat the area not powder coat the hole thing all over. But thats just me. Also it leaves room in the budget for other things.

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

I have heard of some guys that powder coated their frames and that they felt it was not as durable as a heavy duty paint. Not sure if this is true or not but I think that if I was going to do it I would probably paint it.

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

Rustoleum or Rust encapsulator with a clear for a durable finish.

But if you got the cash, well done powercoat looks really good.

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

Never done it but my dad painted the frame/rollcage from the super stock car with a twist. He did it with a brush. Sounds weird and looks like it was brushed, but it coats nice and thick so it won't scratch as easily as spray.

Just an idea.

Powder coat. Make sure you have EVERYTHING done and mounted. No changes at the last moment type thing.

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

If you're going to powder coat it build it twice.Once to get everything and I mean everything exactlly like you want it.Then tear it apart and have it powdercoated. If you paint just use a
stock color and make note of thinner hardner ect used. Then you can touch it up.

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

I vote paint.Powdercoat is brittle and "bursts" off.It doesn`t work right unless everything is done seperately as a single component. It will not "fill" across seams. It can blister or seperate in these areas and water will get trapped. It acts like an eggshell and the rust wil grow unseen until it is very badly pitted.Where you bolt things together it can lift and blister.I`ll get alot of flack for sayin`this,but...I`ve been having parts powdercoated for 20 years and speak from experience.I`d use something with more "give" that can be touched-up easily.Race car and bike frames is one thing. They are exposed or at least ez to inspect and keep up.I`d use a chassis-specific paint.

Re: Frame ? Paint or Powder Coat

I used the tractor paint and hardener from Tractor Supply. It flowed out pretty food with a brush but was very labor intensive.

I would go with Eastwood products next time. I used it on the front crossmember and it seemed just as durable. There is a guy over on Vickery that is Sandbalsting stuff if you want the number I can get it.

I used Eastwoods prouducts on a stationary diesel tank this past summer. The tank already has rust showing through the top coat.
