1970 rear axle width
I am going to do a 5 lug conversion on my truck but I do not know if its an early "narrow" rear end or a late "wider" rear end. It is a 6 lug now but I know chevy used both widths in this year.
I measure about 57.625 backing plate to backing plate and 65" drum to drum. It is marked as a TDA axle....3.73:1. Can someone measure thier 71-72 to see if this is the wider rear end? |

Re: 1970 rear axle width
Mrrilla, welcome to the forums.
I believe the early 70 rears measure about 56 1/2" back to back and late 70 rears about 58" if I recall correctly. Someone is sure to correct me if I'm mistaken though. A search of these threads will get you more info on these conversions even using the longer axles in the narrower housing. Some do.

Re: 1970 rear axle width
56 inch is early, 57 1/2 is the later 'wide' axle. You can slip the 5 lug axle in there with no problem at all.

Re: 1970 rear axle width
LM I knew you'd be along with the correct numbers here shortly. Seems this same question was asked just a day or so ago too. Thanks.
