Manual blinkers?
Whose got them?! How'd you fixem??
My left blinker works fine, but the right one, I have to do manually. Kind of scared to open up the steering column, but I'm tired of it.

Re: Manual blinkers?
If you are saying that the only way to get it to blink is to manually click it on and off, my experience has been that it usually means a bulb is burned out.
I understand your hesitation at going into the column. I have done it twice, and still have a problem. I'm about ready to take it to someone or buy a rebuilt column. Slonaker Slonaker |

Re: Manual blinkers?
I mean that I have to flip the switch up and down to get the "blinking" effect. Aren't there some springs and a cam peice or something?

Re: Manual blinkers?
he means he has to hold the lever up or down to make it stay in posission.
All you have to do is replace the turn signal switch is pritty straight foward and yes there ar a kind of spring more like bent peices of metal to make click/spring action this is from autozone: Turn Signal Switch WELLS Turn Signal Switch for a 1986 Chevrolet Truck C10 1/2 ton P/U 2WD Unit Price: $29.99 Core Value*: $0.00 Part No.: SW324 Weight: 0.4 lbs. I dont think year matters took apart a 1989 gmc and look the same and here what it should look like : Last edited by Srubydo1986; 03-01-2007 at 06:46 PM. |

Re: Manual blinkers?
if you flip it to turn and it stays in the turn position but the blinker doesnt blink, check the bulb. If it wont stay in the turn position or wont return to middle after the turn then it is in the column. My 82 would not return to middle on left turns.. but I am fairly use to is as MOST military vehicles are this way.

Re: Manual blinkers?
Jon, thats exactly what its doing. It won't "click" into position and stay until I turn. I'll tear into it this weekend and report what I find, cause I'm sure I won't know what he heck I'm looking at!
Thanks, srubydo, I be sure to check the part out when I get in there.

Re: Manual blinkers?
You'll need a steering wheel puller and the tool to get the little clip off. Around here, both are available as loaner tools at the parts stores. You could buy both for probably$20 or so at Harbor Freight.
Replacing the turn signal switch, if that is what is wrong, isn't too hard. Unplug it at the bottom. Tie a string to the plug. Pull the plug up through the column. Tie the string to the plug on the new one, and use the same string to pull it back down to the bottom of the column. If you post or PM me your email, I can send you a PDF of 2 or 3 different sets of instructions I assembled off the internet. Some have pics that are very helpful. Slonaker EDIT: Email sent! Re: Manual blinkers?
What about the cancelling cam? That is what generally kicks your turn signal lever off when you turn your wheel, and then straighten it out. You shouldn't necessarily need to replace the whole turn signal apparatus, and I think that you can get replacement cams from LMC.

Re: Manual blinkers?
I think, but I am not sure, that the cams are avaialble in the Dorman HELP section at the auto parts stores.

Re: Manual blinkers?
Replacement cams are available from Autozone, as well as the blinker support cam, I replaced both pieces on mine in about 30 mins. The whole system is basically two cams that act in conjuction with each other. One cam has several contacts on it and your blinker control arm. The only tricky think I noticed is that the tension springs on the lower cam can ping off and get lost if you are not carefull. Hope this helps.
