Pull one or both valve covers. Spin the oil pump until oil comes out of the rocker arm holes(where the pushrods seat). You should be good. If you have a mechanical gauge for the oil, you could watch it also, but I like to see it in the top end to be sure its all through the engine.

IN MY OPINION as long as you have used ample cam lube and prepumped your lifters,it doesnt matter.

after you do this spin the motor over by hand several times to distribute the oil a bit more.

Re: How long does it take to prime a engine?

If you have to set the lifter preload and are bumping it over w/ remote starter you'll prime it. Or just spin the pump til you have it come outta the oil psi fitting. Shouldn't take but 15 sec. to see psi.

Re: How long does it take to prime a engine?

Well depending on the oil pump--I have had engines prime as fast as a couple of minutes up to 5 +

Re: How long does it take to prime a engine?

I left out some of the details. The top end had oil already. The reason I was asking about the oil priming is because I had to change out the rear seal. When I was in there my brother n law and I noticed some small specs of dirt on the bearings. No scoring just some dirt. So we cleaned em but I dont have any grease so he said DO NOT START THAT ENGINE UNLESS YOU PRIME IT!! BIg grin on his face the entire time. Today I spun that dizzy for 5-6 mins. I believe that is going to be ok. I hope.

Re: How long does it take to prime a engine?

I just got my 327 back together. It was completely empty.
The first time I tried to prime it, no oil came up at all.
I removed, took apart and cleaned all my lifters.
After doing all that it took about 3 minutes before the first rocker arm was getting oil. After about 12 Minutes all of them were getting oil.

Re: How long does it take to prime a engine?

I need to change out my valve covers so what I may do when they are off is to give it another round. Wont hurt anything.
