SB Chevy Valve Covers

My sons 70 C-10 has some Edelbrock valve covers that I guess are baffled on a 350 sbc v8. It takes 5-7 minutes to pour 1 quart of oil into the heads through the breather port without the oil overflowing. If my memory serves me correctly, my dad's 65 Chevy shortbed fleetside had I think a 1969 350 sbc with an oil filler cap on one of the valve covers...not a breather hole but just sort of a flat metal cap that would lock down when turned clockwise. Does Chevy or an aftermarket vendor make a valve cover with a capped oil filler hole in addition to the breather hole?

look down in the grommet. When they come new, the bottoms arent cut out. Maybe the PO only cut a tiny hole in the grommet. That or someone may have put a baffle inside the cover.

Does the valve cover ONLY have a rubber grommet/baffle in the hole or after you pull the breather, can you see a metal piece inside? If it is metal, then you can take the valve cover loose and open that piece up a little and the oil runs down better. If it is the rubber grommet/baffle, then it can be opened more to allow oil addition. I have been using aftermarket valve covers and adding oil through the holes for the breather for years, there is always a way to make it better.

There is a metal plate just below the grommet...I presume this is the baffle. Both valves covers are the same. And it doesn't matter if I remove the rubber grommet or not..the oil can't be forced into the head any faster. I'm still hoping someone can confirm or refute my recollection of a stock GM valve cover that had two holes...with one of the holes having a twist on/off metal cap for the oil fill hole. If there was such a valve cover I would like to get my hands on a set. BTW...I will see if I can modify the current baffle in the existing cover to get better throughput. Thanks for all the help.

You can go and buy a GM valve cover, and use them because they have more than one hole OR you can take the ones you have off and take a drill and open up some flow holes for the oil. I would look at how much room there is betweent the plates and the metal of the cover, there is undoubtedly a restriction. I personally would go for the revamp of the Edelbrock covers, but it is your choice.

On my covers, that I put my oil in throguh the same openings as the breather sits in, I have metal type baffles on them and I do not have to wait very long to get oil into the motor. It is a little slower than using an open hole, such as one with a fill cap, but it is quicker than what you stated in your query.

If you want to keep the edelbrock valve covers, just remove the baffle and buy a push-in oil fill cap. This is the route I went when I lost one of my baffle studs.

Mine has both a filler cap and grommet.
