Makin' too many volts?????
What could be causing me to make too many volts? At ilde I'm fine, around 12 volts, but at speed it pegs the volt meter out. The voltage regulator is just a few months old and my "GENERATOR" light does not come on like it did when the old reg had gone out before.
Its too many volts for the radio too, it will only come on when the RPMs go back down and the volt meter reads 12v. HELP!!!! JD |

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
It should run around 14 volts any more and the regulator is not working

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
Yea, but what's makin' my regs go out so often? The Alternator is new, well a new rebuilt, and this regulator was a high-dollar Borg Warner, previous one was a cheapy.
Maybe I'm overlaoding the 60Amp alternator? All I've added was the stereo and it ran great for 2-3 months. Before that I didn't even have a stereo and it still seemed to kill regulators. JD |

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
My truck would overcharge and undercharge randomly. It would jump to 18V while running, and then fall to 10V. It was retarded. After cleaning wires, having the alternator checked, and swapping out 3 voltage regulators I finally converted to an internally regulated alt. out of a mid 80's silverado. I think they at 90 amp alts. No more voltage regulator.

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
Are your alternator and regulator the same amp rating?

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
im kinda in the same boat as you. "Project Bluebird" jumps really hard continuously from 12 to 14 volts. Makes the lights flicker when at idle.

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
I am also suffering from this problem. The volt gauge is reading 13.5 when the engine is running and 13v when its off. My 5amp fuse keeps on blowing out when i hook up the memory wire to the battery . Any suggestions?---Andy

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
As stated before you should have around 14.5 volts with the alt running. that is normal any more than 14.5 and you have problems.

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
does anyone else know why my radio's memory fuse keeps blowing out? Its a custom autosound and i just got it back from tech support which they replaced a crystallized wire. Im thinking about adding a 2ohm resistor but that will take away voltage, Will it still be ok to do? or is there another way? ---Andy (sorry bout the thread jack )

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
OK. I got home and unplugged the Reg and plug an old one in, that DOES make my Generator light come on because it doesn't make enough voltage. I stayed around 12-13 volts like it's supposed to regardless of the RPMs. So the problem IS my new, expensive voltage regulator. Plugged it back in knowing I need a new one tomorrow.
Well, as electrical system go, as I plugged it back in I have normal voltage. Like nothing was ever wrong. Maybe it needed to reset itself, who knows? On the subject of a new style one wire 90-100 AMP Alternator, what make them so special? I mean it still has a voltage regulator, just internal. These don't go out as often????WHY? Thanks all, JD |

Re: Makin' too many volts?????
just get rid of all of it and put on a one wire internally regulated alternator...you can pick them up for around 95 bucks or less and I think they are between 80 and 100 amps, so they'll take most anything...you may also check all your wiring under hood and dash...a short that only shorts from time to time will cause a load unload problem with regulators
